What is the purpose of vanilla scented pacifiers?

I'm looking at the gumdrop pacifier and you can choose natural or vanilla scented.  Hmm.

    we got a soothie that was vanilla scented at the hospital.  don't know what the purpose is, but i love the way it smells!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm considering taking up pacifier sucking......

    apparently vanilla scent has been found to be soothing to infants... ds decdided to stop taking ANY paci about two weeks after i got him new gumdrops- vanilla or not

    I'm not sure if there is a purpose, but DS  wont take nay other pacifier
