Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

i'm sorry - another d&c question

i posted below about a scheduled d&c next wed.  i have another question:  the fetus stopped growing at 8 wks (discovered at 10 wks).  my d&c is not scheduled until what would be 11 weeks.  are there any complications that i should be concerned about if the fetus remains in my body for 3 weeks?

(i called my ob, but still waiting for a return call.  wanted to know if anyone had any experience w/ this.)  thanks.

Re: i'm sorry - another d&c question

  • My baby was not alive and still in my body for 5-6 weeks before it was discovered (after some bleeding began). My midwife & OB both told me that I could continue to wait if I wanted to let it pass naturally. I only went through with the D&C right away because I was in very severe pain and wanted to be done with the whole thing.

So no, it's not a problem that your D&C isn't done right away. It's common with missed m/c because the baby has typically been in the body, not alive, for weeks.

  • I'm not sure.  My doctor made it sound like I had to have the baby removed right away for my health, but she didn't specify why and I didn't ask.  It could have been just that she was concerned about what would happen if I miscarried naturally, because of how far along I was (15 weeks), there could have been too much blood loss.  That's just a guess though.  I would think that if they knowingly scheduled it for next week then they know that everything will be ok though.
  • My situation was the same as yours'. Baby died at 6 wks, discovered at 10 wks. I waited for 3 wks to m/c naturally, and when still nothing happened, at should be 13 wks I had a D&C. I don't think waiting naturally is bad, but after 3 wks of nothing happening my dr wanted to go ahead with the D&C to make sure everything was taken care of.
