Maternity bikini- is it necessary?

It's my first time pregnant and I will be very preg by the summer.  I want to enjoy time on the beach and have seen maternity bikinis.  Is it really necessary to buy these or can I just use my regular bikinis?  I have string bikinis and am thinking those can just be adjusted.  Thoughts?

Re: Maternity bikini- is it necessary?

  • I am going to try to do this.  I may buy a new bigger NORMAL bikini since my boobs are bigger but I do think I can deal with the adjustable bottoms for awhile...however, after I get to be about 7 months, I'm not sure i'll want to be exposing all that flesh :). haehehe.

    I am going to Aruba and MExico in the next two months though and fully intend on wearing my older bikinis and not buying new.

  • I don't think maternity bikinis are necessary.  Regular bikinis are fine.  I had to buy a new one recently because my old one wouldn't fit my boobs:)   Tankinis are different story - I tried on a bunch and the ended up looking like bikinis gone wrong!

  • You would probably need a maternity bikini to work with your body better.  The bottoms probably wouldn't cover as well as they did before.  If you are like me and your boobs have doubled in size, the top wouldn't be very helpful in keeping things in check either.  You'll probably have to try some things on once it gets closer to summer.

  • Many women outgrow their regular underwear during pregnancy, so I would assume the same thing is possible for a bikini. I would wait until later on in your pregnancy to get anything because you'll have a better idea of how big/small you will be during swimsuit season.

  • Yes, of course! The boobs!  My boobs used to be tiny but are not gigantic.  I keep forgetting about them because I'm so not accustomed to them!
  • I for sure needed a larger top, my boobs were huge, and my giant nipples for sure would have been all over the place in my regular bikini.

    I just went out and got a cute bikini with an enormous top and my regular size bottoms, thankfully the store i went to was one of those where you bought the pieces separately so you could get varying sizes.

  • My bikini would cover like one cheek and one boob :)  I'm not planning on swimming this summer (no water near me) but if I was I would have to get a new suit.

  • I just bought a new bikini this last weekend. I went for a normal one because maternity bathing suits are just not attractive to me. I ended up having to go up one size in the bottoms and three sizes in the top!

    If you are like me you'll need extra coverage in both areas and a string bikini may not be enough fabric.

    I am not a fan of maternity swimsuits. I'm definetely a bikini girl and I do believe a larger size can work depending on your size. That's what I'm doing.

    Warning::

    You might want to hold off buying anything till you grow a little more. I had a growth spurt around week 21. My boobs, belly, all grew tremendously. Everything else is the same, but see where you're at.

  • I tried on my string bikini bottoms recently and they still fit fine.  Granted, the strings need to be loosened, but they still cover enough.  The top, however, is another story.  If I decide that I want to be seen in a bathing suit this summer, I'm just going to go out and buy a larger top.

  • If your old ones fit then go for it. I will not be getting into any type of bathing suit anytime soon!! I don't want to scare people away!

  • I'm not sure, but.. I did try on my bikinis the other day out of curiosity, and they just looked ridiculous.  I would at least need to buy a bigger size.  But if yours fit you fine, then I don't see a problem with it!
