Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Am I the only mom with a puke-a-phobia?

I've had this phobia for quite a while - but now that I have my son I am sort of constantly nervous about what I'm going to do when he gets that nasty bug the first time! My co-workers are always coming in with stories about their kids puking in the bed, etc.  I'm sure I'll get over it (since I'll have no choice)...just wondering if I'm the only one.  (yes, I'm a weird-o!)

  • I am a nurse, so no I dont have the phobia.  I do have a girlfriend that has had the phobia all her life.  She would do everything in her power not to get sick.  She now has two kids and has delt with it ok.

  • omg. it really is horrible. dd1 had the flu at 13 months. she started crying in her bed, so we go down the hallway and the smell would hit you when you turn the corner. then, when youd go in, youd feel like total crap bc they threw up in bed so you have to take them out, bathe them, wash all the laundry - and all the while the smell could kick your ass_ LOL it was about 2-3 days of ME throwing up WHILE i was cleaning her/her bed up. dh has the stomach for that - i do not.

eta: after that first time though - it has never been as bad. :)

  • I am still puke phobic but when DD was sick I just felt bad for her.  I was freaking because I was trying to get her to puke in the sink but she threw herself back and almost choked.  That was much worse than the vomit.  Kids puke, it is bad because babies can't run to the toilet.  I guess you get over it.

  • I had it really bad when I was a teenager, I couldn't even see someone puke on tv or a movie w/out it making me gag and immediately freak out...it's faded some as I have gotten older, but I still am dreading that first real puking episode!

  • I did majorly when I was a kid and in my teens. I don't love to see people puke now, but I hate to say I got somewhat desensitized going through college and all the drinking and subsequent puking by people around me and myself on occasion. I don't love to see people puke now or DD for that matter, but I do okay with it. Its different when its a kid somewhat for me as well. Not as bad. Ick!

I had DD throwing up in the sink too when she was sick a few weeks ago. Papertowels and burp clothes weren't cutting it and I didn't want to hold her over the toilet.

  • Yep you'll get over. I had it most of my life.  The other day my dd started coughing and puking all over and I reached out with both hands and caught it.  It wasn't too bad and I saved myself from having to clean it of the floor and her clothes.  Safe to say I'm pretty much over the "phobia" now.

  • um, I still have it.  My DD threw up in the car, I felt like such an awful mom b/c I couldn't deal, I gagged all the way home, called my DH and he had to come and get her, strip her down, the car seat down, the whole nine yards.

I cried b/c as a mom I really thought that I should have been able to deal, thankfully DH has a stomach of steel and he deals with it well.  I had a pact with her that she was never to puke, she's broken it numerous times.

  • I don't normally have a phobia to puking, but like you said now that I have a child I seriously dread the first puking episode. I'm sure I'll deal with it better than my DH, he tends to freak out even when I'm sick/puking. I'm just thankful that so far she has not puked, we've been blessed for sure!
  • I have a DS that is 7yo and I STILL have this phobia. I don't clean up his puke. I let DH deal with that. ONe night DS got sick in the middle of the night when DH was working. He ran to the bathroom and luckily made it to the toilet! Wel li went to comfort him, and don't you know I start gagging and puking! I was puking in the tub, he was puking in the toilet. Once he saw me puking, it made him puke more. It was awful and I felt sooooo bad.
