How Do U Give Tri-Vi-Sol Drops without Making a Mess?

So, I am breast feeding and Pediatrician told me to give 1mL of Tri-Vi-Sol.  I gave it to her yesterday and she didn't like it at all....sour face, turning away....very messy...purple stains everywhere.

Please give me some tips on how to give the drops to get it to stay down and be less messy?!

AND....DO YOU KEEP THE DROPPER INSIDE the bottle/solution or do you store the dropper separately?

  • I give it to DS at bath time every night.  I actually give it to him while he's in the bath...that way I can easily clean up whatever doesn't stay in his mouth!  And I keep the dropper in the bottle

  • i put some on my nipple a few times a day.

  • First of all, yes, I keep the dropper in the bottle.  As far as giving it to DC, when I first started giving him the vitamins I would only put a couple of drops in his mouth at a time.  If she wont suck it down you can try a few drops and then put her pacifier in her mouth so she sucks it down....repeat until she gets the full dose.

My mother had a brilliant idea of giing him the vitamins and then sticking him on my boob right away. DO NOT do this!!!!!!!!!  I almost screamed from the pain the vitamins made my already very tender breast. (my mother felt awful for suggesting it afterwards.)

  • We would just put small drops in her mouth at first.  Then once we were giving her a bottle of pumped milk a day we just put it in the bottle with the milk.

  • Oh my - this has been a struggle for us!  We have finally worked it out fairly well.  FIrst of all, don't ever associate it with eating (told by pediatrician) as it can cause them to not want the boob/bottle.  We keep the dropper inside.  We have bath time every night (it is a routine that helps him sleep). . . so I undress him to the diaper and put a long piece of cloth under him on the changing table . . .and I squirt the dropper into the side of his cheek.  He mostly takes all of it and I try and tilt his head backward.  I will tell you it has taken some time but it has gotten A LOT better as he gets used to it.  Some days are messy (I just use a wipe) . . .
  • Stick the dropper in the LO's mouth pointed toward the back of their cheek.  Also do it slowly so they have time to swallow.  You may need to lightly massage the throat area to induce the swallow reflex since they are not used it & wondering what in heavens name you are sticking in their mouth :)  The same thing goes with Antibiotics or other medicines.

    Good luck!

  • Well i am sorry you are having a tough time. My DD happens to love the stuff, but for her zantac meds i have to put it in her cheeks and the pedi said if you plug her nose for s sec it forces her to swallow. It does work. So you could try that. Good luck
