What to do for someone who's lost a baby?

A coworker of mine lost her 4 month old son last week. I don't know the circumstances but I'm pretty sure it was a sudden thing. We were both pregnant at the same time and flew together on several trips. I feel so sorry for her and can't imagine her pain. I would like to do something for her but I'm not sure if sending something is good or will just remind her of her loss. I was thinking some prepared meals...WDYT?

  • I think meals would be a sweet idea. i can't imagine even being able to function with a loss of a child , cooking would be the last thing on your mind. I'll be saying a prayer for your co worker. How sad.

  • its such a hard situation because everyone's needs are totally different in respects to how they deal with loss. As colleague of mine recently lost her son to suicide and as an office, we sent her flowers and let her know that we are all here for her and that she is in our thoughts. There is not much we can say that will magically make her feel better but knowing that people support her and are there for her, I think, is the best thing. not sure if i am of any help, but i think it is important for her to know you are there for her as support if she needs it.

  • Ugh...the thought of that just makes my stomach hurt :(   I wish I knew what to suggest...all my ideas just seem so cliche.  That said I do agree that the last thing on my mind would be cooking  Maybe things that are freezeable, etc?  How terribly sad :(

  • Sadly, in the last 2 years we've had 3 friends lose infants. We took food to all of them and let them know that we were there whenever and for whatever they needed.

  • I am so sorry for your co-worker.  That just made my heart sink.  I think the food idea is very thoughtful and I think no matter what you do she will appreciate it.

  • How very sad.  I can't imagine what she must be going through.

Here's a blog post with things to do.  There are links to other blog posts  on the same topic too.
