Who knew boxes cost so freaking much?!

https://store.uhaul.com/boxes

We are moving (we currently live in a 900 sq. ft. 2 bed, 1 bath home which just won't work for a family of five!) and I am collecting boxes from places like Lowes and some friends moved recently and we're using their used boxes but we still need a lot more.  I figured I would just check out how much boxes are.  You have GOT to be kidding me!  Well heck!  I'll just throw my clothes and kitchen appliances in a freaking trash bag.  Those prices are crazy!!!!  UGH!!

  • Ask your local schools if they have extra book boxes. We got most of our moving boxes from our local elementary school. Also - the apple boxes at grocery stores are really sturdy. Sometimes if you ask, they'll give you some for free!

  • Look on craigslist. There are free boxes on there all the time. Business will practically beg you to come get them. MUCH better than paying for them.

  • Trash bags(as ghetto as they sound) totally work. We got boxes for free from grocery stores and such for heavy things like books, but all the clothes blankets pillow etc went in trash bags, ecause there is NO WAY i was paying 5 dollars for a cardboard box.

  • Check with your local grocery store and restaurants. I worked in food service in high school and in the dining hall in college and we always had tons of boxes we were throwing in the trash or recycling.

Craigslist is a good idea...We got ours from grocery stores, work and liquor stores.  If you are not going very far keep things in drawers, baskets, and trash bags...clothes on hangers so it is an easy transport from closet to closet.
  • OOooo liquor stores.  That's not a bad idea!
  • Walmart has great boxes. If you go there super early in the morning they can give you the boxes from stocking the shelves that night. I love their clorox boxes. They're very sturdy.
  • I wouldn't buy boxes!  IF we do move, we have a lot of boxes and my mom manages a resturant and they have tons of extra boxes.
  • Liquor stores have good sturdy boxes and are excellent for moving.
  • If you have a walmart anywhere near you def try them.... When we moved we got all of our boxes from there... and they were happy to give them to us!
  • It's true that Craigslist is good, but they tend to go REALLY FAST.

And if you DO have to buy a few boxes, the cheapest are at the UHaul store--not even kidding.  I used to be a regular on a moving website.  They also have mattress bags, etc.

  • It's insane on the prices that Uhaul charges for boxes.  When we moved and were in need of them after we thought we had enough, we just went to Sam's Club and got some.  They were a little cheaper, bigger, and came in a bundled pack.  The other boxes we got, we waited until around midnight and did a drive by on the back of Krogers.LOL  Those people get to be a little picky about their thrown out boxes.  What makes it so bad is that they are sitting by the trash.
