Babies on the Brain

My opinion of two middle names...

People seem to not like it.  Why?

I have two middle names, and I love it.  They took my two grandfather's names and picked the female versions.  I love having that connection to both sides of my family.

So...not every kid will grow up to hate having two middle names!

Is anyone else planning to name their child with two middle names?

Re: My opinion of two middle names...

  • As long as they aren't bad names/spellings I'm sure they won't mind...

  • My daughter has 2....Zada-Alana....her father and I couldn't decide which one we liked better.

  • DD has two. My last name is hyphenated but DH wanted her to just have one last name. So we did two middle, June and my maiden name. If she only had my maiden it would have sounded to me like she didn't have a middle name. The only thing I wish I'd done is hyphenate the two, so that it was clear that it is two middle and not two last.

  • My kids will.  DH and I have different last names and neither of us were comfortable just cutting one out entirely.  Our names couldn't be combined or effectively hyphenated and 2 last names seems like a far bigger hassle than 2 middle names.

So 2 middle names it is.  My last name will be their second middle name and we will refer to our family as we do now - the Smith/Roberts (made up for clarity's sake).

  • Easjer - we have two different last names as well!  But my last name is also a male first name...so we aren't using it for our girl.  But possibly for a future boy.  (P.S. Do people bug you about not changing your name?  I've been married almost two years and still get questioned about it!)

I think the big thing with two middle names is for them to flow...my sister's are awesome, they actually sound like one name.

I have a friend with THREE middle names.  They do not flow at all.  His name does sound like a law firm because of it...

  • Ours totally do not flow, lol.  But they sound worse hyphenated.  It was just really important to me to include my family name in my children's names - especially as we are much, much closer to my family.

If my kids decided to drop it later that would be ok - and their decision to make.  They won't see 4 names except on really formal documents, and how often do we really come across those?  My mom had, like, 5 names because her maiden name was so freaking long (made up example: Drano Plumbing-Cleaner) - they just went by Drano.

No, I never really got a lot of crap for it - but I expect that to change when we have kids.  I mean, I get mail from DH's friends and family addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Robert or to E Robert.  But even my mom - who KNOWS why I didn't change my name has hinted it would be better to change it when I have kids.

I'm sure it might be more convenient - but we've gotten along well enough for 3.5 years as the Smith/Roberts family, and I think we can make that work with kids too.

  • I was told that I didn't really love my husband because I didn't change my name to his.

Or they assume I'm a radical feminist.

I'm not.  I just didn't want to change my name.

Some people insist on sending stuff to me addressed with his last name.  If people don't know, that's fine. It only bugs me with certain people who KNOW I didn't change it, and still call me that anyway.

Do you go by Mrs. or Ms, btw?

  • I don't have a problem with two middle names because i have two middle names but when doing paper work they put them together and it irrates me. But i am not planning on giving my kids two middle names just because of the frustration of paper work.
  • I've never had a problem with paper work...most stuff I have had to fill out asks for middle INITIALS, not names, so maybe that's why? Or, like in my driver's license, they asked for my middle names, but they just wrote down the middle initials anyway

  • Geez!  Someone suggested that and I fired back that I loved my husband dearly but I couldn't stand his family and I would not associate myself with them by sharing a name.

Which was true enough. Those bridges have been mended, but still.  I would have kept my own name regardless.  It was all personal and nothing to do with feminism - bottom line is that I *like* my name.  That was one of the biggest reasons in my decision.

I go by Ms. most of the time.  I've been called Mrs.  but then people refer to my dh by my name and he rolls his eyes.

My grandmother sends us checks addressed to Mr. and Mrs. J Robert.  lol.  But she's quite old, I don't blame her for forgetting, but then I have to endorse them E. Smith-Robert or my bank won't process them.

  • Not to one up you all BUT...

I have a double first name no hyphen (like Mary Anne)

I have three middle names (grandma's 3 sisters)

I did not change my birth name upon my marriage

    my kids are hypenates

    !

  • You win!  But unfortunately, I have no prizes left for you...cookie?

Do you care about having so many names?  Or do you not even think about it, since you always had them?

Easjer - yeah, I didn't want to change my name either.  For no real reason.  I like my last name, but it's boring, so you'd think I'd want a change.  But no.  I think people have a harder time understanding because I DON'T have some big "reason" not to change it.  It just didn't feel right.

  • I like having the names.  They are NEVER used.  I only put my first name (double name) and middle intial on stuff.

Even when buying my house, RMV, passport, etc. it's only first then middle #1.

Doesn't phase me at all!  Having a double first is hard becuase when people just call me "Mary" I'm all "nope, it's Mary Anne" but that's easy enough!

  • I have two middle names.  It doesn't really bother me because I don't use my second one for anything really.  In fact, I usually don't use either one.  My dd has two middle names.  So more than likely our kids will have 2 as well.  We'll have to see.  My maiden name just happens to be his middle name.  So that will most likely get used as a middle name for a boy.
  • My sister has a double middle name and she's always liked it. We've considered it, but we never found two names (or techinically, three names) that we liked together.
  • My kids will...

Our daughter will be Anna Carol-Lynn

    and our son..

    Anthony Robert Dallas

    the end.

  • I have 2 middle names so my intials wouldn't be RAT going up.  Honestly it is not a big deal at all.  On documents I just put the first middle intial.  My middle names are hyphanted so I think of them as just one name.
  • I never cared much either way, but never intended on naming a child with 2 middle.  But the more people I know do it (with shorter names that sound good together), the more I like it better.  I am now considering it myself, definitely for a girl, questionable for a boy...
