Paternity Leave

What type of time off is available for men when it comes to pregnancy leave?  My DH's company doesn't provide any specific paternity benefits, so I am trying to figure out what is available through the state and FMLA and whether any of it is paid.  Thanks!

Re: Paternity Leave

  • There is California Paid Family Leave (CPFL) which is available to mothers and fathers for bonding purposes. It is up to 6 weeks of partially paid (55%) leave. see info here: https://www.edd.ca.gov/disability/Paid_Family_Leave.htm and https://www.paidfamilyleave.org/. If he pays into SDI or some type of State Disability insurance then he should qualify (does not apply to teachers or state employees). It doesn't provide job protection, but FMLA provides 12 weeks of unpaid leave with job protection for employees who work in companies with 50 or more employees so they can be used together. He should check with his HR dept to get more info.

CPFL can also be used intermittently and does not have to be used all at once as long as it is used in the 1st year of the baby's life. I have maternity leave with my company so I am using CPFL intermittently so that I use one day a week and 4 days a week until my CPFL runs out.

    HTH!!
