1st Trimester

Anybody else hating meat these days?

I haven't eaten any meat for the past week, and for the week or two before that I had to literally force it down.  It just really grosses me out.

I'm feeling like I'm depriving myself of all that good protein now.  Besides eggs and beans (which I am LOVING these days), what are some other foods should I be eating to try and replace the lack of meat in my diet?

  • peanut butter and tuna (in moderation) are both good options

  • I haven't eaten meat since getting the BFP. It literally turns my stomach thinking about it. I posted a protein link awhile back for Blair so maybe I'll try to find that again for you. 
  • Peanut butter, protein enriched pastas, protein shakes (FF milk + chocolate protein powder + banana = yum!).

  • I can't handle steak. At all. Peanut butter though? YUM!

  • I can't stand chicken (unless it is in nugget form) or pork.

    I love steak.

    I will eat anything w/ black beans. I espcially like a big salad loaded w/ black beans, avocado, tomato and sour cream. The avocado is great for the good fats and the black beans are loaded w/ iron and fiber.

  • Chicken I've got no problem with.  Red meat I have no desire.  makes me sad because I really love steak a lot.

    I'm with you on the eggs.  I could eat scrambled eggs with cheese for every meal lately

  • -low fat cottage cheese

    -low fat greek yogurt

    -protein powder

    -kashi golean cereal

    -eggs

    I'm sure there are others I'm not thinking of right now.  Beans are good too.  Nuts and nut butters are a good healthy fat source, but not really a main protein source.  I do a bit of baking with protein powders too.  My favorite is high protein banana bread (although that involves splenda, so not so great if avoiding artificial sweetners)

  • I'm having a similar problem with chicken (I've been okay so far with beef, but I eat it so rarely and thats usually only when I get a steak craving).  I had a chicken burrito last night and it had massive amounts of chicken -- it was in long strips not even cut into small pieces.  I ate around the chicken and was totally into the black beans.

  • Eat Quinoa - it's sort of like rice but has more protein than meat and more calcium than milk. It's awesome to throw in salads, use it as a side, whatever. It's great!
  • I'm not a big fan of meat anyway...but since being pregnant...it just makes me sick...the only thing I can seem to eat is ham...and thats pushing it...
  • I cant even stand the smell of it. The only food that sounds good to me now is plain carbs
  • Same here. I opened a tupperwear container the other night thinking it was my grapes...but it was a whole bunch of cooked ground beef from hubby's supper. I RAN to the bathroom.

    I also can't look at any meat, including chicken, but I can eat it if it is cut up in food, like in a wrap or something.

  • I wouldn't worry, your cravings and repulsions will change! I didn't want meat for weeks, then when my morning sickness calmed down (11 weeks) I was fine with meat again. I can even cook it! Good for you for eating beans. They make my guts hurt so bad right now I can't eat them at all! I ate so much damn cheese in that no-meat period it is grossing me out now. And cheese is wonderful!

  • Ewww...Just seeing the word "meat" is making me nauseous.  The last meat I tried to eat was a chicken tender a few days ago and all I could do is gag while looking at it.

  • I am so glad to read that SO many other people are also disgusted by meat. ?It makes me feel so normal!
  • i have days when the smell of chicken turns my stomach! I want to hurl !  I am pretty much trying to get as much protein (other meats, beans etc and protein shakes) in when i can and try to eat chicken on days when it doesnt repulse me! Its so weird to love something one day and gobble it down and the sight of it the next makes me sick! oh well,,,,,,i just take it day by day!

     

     

    p.s im also having this weird thing with leftovers...i am so in the mood for something one day but the next i cannot even think about all the leftovers waiting for me in the fridge! WEIRD!! My poor DH hates wasting so he gets stuck chowing it all down!

  • All good suggestions, also try edamame, it is a soy bean found in asian food, it has a ton of protein in it! ?I get mine in the freezer section and heat it in the microwave. ?Also counts as a veggie when you eat it! yum! ;) ?GL

  • The thought of meat doesn't necessarily disgust me, but I don't really want it. The ONLY meat I want right now is from chili, like a 3 way or cheese coney, or from really thin burgers from local places (thankfully I eat those a lot).  I tried a salad with chicken on it the other day and ate only a few bites of the chicken.  If I go to Chipotle, I'm OK eating some of the pork that is mixed in with the burrito, but I think it's because the quantity is so low and there is so much other great stuff in there. I won't eat any other kind of meat though, which I used to enjoy. 
  • I am totally in the same boat with you! I was a huge meat eater, chicken, hamburgers and steak were may favorites and now it completely grosses me out to even look at them, let alone eat it! Sad .

     I was going to try a veggie burger to see if that would work? Although some other protien options are (these are from my Dr.)

     

    2-3 oz of fish ( no more than 4 x a week)

    4 TBSP of peanut butter

    1 c. cooked beans

    1/4 c. of nuts

    2 eggs

  • I hated meat through first tri and half of second tri. For protein, milk, cheese, nuts, etc
  • I've been drinking shakes and whatnot- meat is gross these days.  Every once in a while I can choke down chicken...

  • I went through a week where meat super repulsed me. But then, I got over it. I don't know what it was.
    I had to post though because I found great humor in the fact that there is a red meat hater (currently) out there dressed in a bacon suit. I LOVE THIS WEBSITE!
  • I love the fact that every time I come to these boards, I feel just a little less weird about whatever new experience I'm having.  Yep, once upon a time, I needed to have some sort of meat with dinner.  It just had to be there.  Now, I can take it or leave it and in fact have actually been 'forcing' myself to eat it by making things I know I really really really like.  I started by baking some chicken tenders and then putting them in my salad.  I've slowly been able to incorporate more meats but it's just not the first thing I think of anymore when I'm hungry. 

     I do however, crave salads, could have it morning, noon and night.

  • I go to Inta Juice or Jamba Juice and get protein supplement since meat totally disgusts me.
