Ok yet another nursery question, is a glider/rocker really necessary?

I don't really like gliders or rocking chairs for that matter. The motion actually makes me sick. So since the nursery is blue with chocolate accents, i was just going to move the chocolate chaise from our office to the nursery. That way I can sleep in there if I need to, put my feet up and just rock him myself. Your thoughts...

Re: Ok yet another nursery question, is a glider/rocker really necessary?

  • Whatever works for you! No sense in spending $ on a glider that makes you sick!
  • Loading the player...
  • I think that would be great. There is no hard and fast rule that every nursery must have a glider/rocker!
Really all you'll want/need is a place to sit with baby for late night feedings, or reading/cuddling as part of your bedtime routine, etc.?
A chaise sounds like a comfy option!?
  • I love the idea, I am putting our office couch in the baby's room and a glider but I love gliders, they are so comfy.
  • i had one for both of the boys and NEVER used it. looks great in the room, but that's about it. i would end up in our big, comfy recliner as opposed to the glider. so, no, not necessary.
  • I think it sounds like a good idea. I don't think gliders/rockers are "necessary," but I think they are nice to have if you don't have any other way of comfortablly rocking the baby.
  • A lot of people might say no, but for me - yes it is necessary.  We only have the one couch in our living room and it is uncomfortable as it is.  I can't imagine comfortably feeding a baby in it.  The rocking motion makes it so much easier to feed and keep the baby soothed, the ottoman with the footstool is a lifesaver.. definitely getting one.  We registered for a nice one but if we don't get it, we will either get that one or MH will probably try to convince me to get a less expensive one.

  • Sure, a chaise will be fine. As long as you have somewhere to sit for middle of the night feedings and putting to bed, you will be fine. I don't always "rock" on the glider, I usually just sit there and hold DD.

  • imo, its probably a great idea to have a supportive, comfortable seat to hold and feed the baby. If you have an ottoman then thats all the better. If its the rocking that you don't like than anything that still gives you the above things will work.
  • We're going to use a huge comfy chair I had when I lived at my mom's (my room is still the way I left it, she refuses to change it =/) and DH is going to turn that into a rocker, so we can use it later on
  • like others have said as long as you have some place to sit for middle of the night feedings then i would use whatever makes you feel comfortable. and you want something that's easy to get in and out of while holding a baby, bottle, burp cloth etc... i could never feed DS in my bed b/c it was too high for me to sit in while trying to hold DS so our glider worked out great.  especially b/c we moved him to his crib in the nursery w/in the first week he was home and of course that's where his glider is.
