High-Risk Pregnancy

Pregnancy after Scoliosis Post-Spinal Fusion Surgery?

I had post-spinal fusion surgery for my scoliosis 15 years ago and had the rods removed a few years later. I am now contemplating getting pregnant and would like to know if anyone has had complications during pregnancy or delivery due to the spinal fusion. Any information would be great!

?

Thanks?

Re: Pregnancy after Scoliosis Post-Spinal Fusion Surgery?

  • Scoliosis runs rampant in my DHs family. 3 relatives had had the same surgery, and 2 of the three have had babies.  All delivered by c-section, but they are also very cautious, medically, and didn't want to risk anything at all by attempting a vaginal delivery.  None had issues.

  • Hi! I had twins after spinal fusion for scoliosis -- I was fused from T4-L4, so very extensively (13 vertebrae).  My pregnancy was fine and not complicated -- my back did very well, and honestly hurt less than most other places, and I was carrying 13 lbs of baby.

I had a c-section because both babies were breech.  The major concern was that they would not be able to place an epidural or spinal because of scar tissue and because I am fused so, so low -- they normally place the epidural higher up in the lumbar spine.  We scheduled a c-section, and I met with the anesthesiologist beforehand so he could see my spinal films.  He was not terribly optimistic that he would be able to place the epidural, thanks to the extent of the fusion and some serious scar tissue.  He gave me a 20% chance of success, but reassured me that the babies would be fine if I had to go under general.

The day of surgery, he got the epidural in on the first try, much to everyone's surprise (and my relief).  It worked perfectly, surgery went well, etc.  I was happy because it meant I got to stay awake for the delivery, and because DH got to be there.

I would advise getting films from your last surgery so that they are available for your doc.  If you don't have any, have some done before you get pregnant.

I do not know if I would have been able to push well if I had not had a c-section simply because I can't bend my back much.  That would probably depend on the extent of your fusion.

    Good luck!!

  • A very good friend of mine has had two perfectly healthy babies. The first was a c/s, the second was a VBAC. Best of luck to you! :)

  • I still have 3 rods in my back, two fusions, and two 30 degree curves and had no back problems with my previous pregancy.  I even gave birth to him vaginally.  I just know I won't be able to have a epi.  Best of luck to you.
