Babies: 9 - 12 Months

help my dd sleep

so my dd is about 6 months old and she is still waking up at night. i think that she is just waking out of habit now because she doesn't seem hungry, it's like she just wants to use me a a pacifer to get back to sleep. i know this is bad, but since i started back to work i've been putingt her next to me in bed to nurse because i need to get some sleep...i have to be to work by 5:30a.m. so I feel like I don't have the energy to spend 30-40 minutes in her nursery getting her back to sleep. Also, I read these posts about other babies going to bed at like 7:30 and I get so sad, she doesn't usually until like 10, but I do think that I am going to see how she does with an earlier bedtime, but what's the easiest way to do that? Are those houses like extra quiet from then on, I feel like between neighbors outside and the t.v an dogs she'd end up getting woken up because we are still very much awake at like 7:30 or 8. I don't know what to do, just tell me anything you think might help!!

Re: help my dd sleep

  • You could try moving up her bedtime in 15 minute increments over the next several days and see how that works.  What kind of naps is she taking?  You may want to shorten those.  DS is now ok with 2 naps, about 1 1/2 each.

As for the going to sleep on her own, I'd try to remove the idea of going to sleep from getting fed/being at the breast.  Start putting her down awake but drowsy.  We started Ferberizing around 6 months, and it's been wonderful.  We were having issues with DS getting back to sleep when he woke up at 3 am to feed.  Now we're down to 1 feeding per night (instead of two) and on the 1 other time he usually wakes up at night, he fusses/cries a bit, we go in to let him know we're there, and he puts himself back to sleep.  It's such a relief.  I'd really recommend reading the book - we don't use the intervals that he does (we did them a bit closer together), but really, it's been a lot less painless than what was happening, for all of us.

    Good luck.

  • We do use a sound machine to try and muffle all the extra house noises.  DS goes to bed around 8 pm.
