Where will you have your baby shower? Help!

I found an awesome place that I wanted to rent, but it turns out that it is $700 for only a couple of hours. I know that I have plenty of time, but the place that I have in mind is already booked through June so I would love to settle on something soon. Are you having your shower at someones home or will you be renting a venue? If you are renting, how much are you (or whoever is paying) spending?

Re: Where will you have your baby shower? Help!

  • My BF's family is throwing it so they are having it @ her parents' home.

  • My parents have a large tent that we will be using at their house.  It's centrally located for the people invited so it will work out.  We did the same thing for my bridal shower and my dad put heaters in it in the morning and it worked nicely.  There aren't any venues near where I live and if there is one, it's not an affordable one.
  • My mom is throwing mine, so it will be at my family's restaurant.  I'm not sure how much she will be spending on it...but she will get most of the food discounted since she is a manager there.  I don't want her spending a lot of money on the shower though...I would much rather her spend it on the baby!
  • my IL's are hosting one at their home, we are having one at my house and the third will be at my work office.
  • My shower in PA at home is at my parent's house and my shower in NY with relatives is at our cabin in the Adirondacks. $700 seems like a lot just to rent a place for a shower.

  • I am having 3 formal showers. ?One at a tea room, and two at people's homes. ?I am also having one at my school where I teach and I think DH's co-workers are throwing him one.

    ?

BTW I have never heard of someone planning their own shower. ?Usually your family or friends select the venue.?

  • That is just a waste of money if you ask me, have it at your house or a friends. For our first we had one at my mom's and one at my SIL ( should of stayed home for that one) but spending that much just for a baby shower is outrageous.
  • we had my bridal shower at my parents house, but it ended up being a little too crowded (we have both families and friends, so it's a gang) so i know they are renting space at a restaurant for the baby shower. no clue where or how much it's costing, though.
  • MIL's parents have a clubhouse in their condo community that they can reserve so that is where my shower will be!

  • I wouldn't spend that much on a place just for a baby shower. Two of my friends are throwing mine, and it is at one of the girls houses. I threw one for a friend a few weeks ago that had 40 people come, and I was able to use the church. It was FREE and they had nice tables, chairs, etc.

I can't justify spending $700 on a location for a baby shower. If this were a wedding, I would feel differently, but I would rather spend that money on items for the baby...or on clothing for me!

  • Because I have a large family and so does DH, we have to rent a place, but we are renting a local fire house for $125.00

  • I am having 4 showers. MIL is going to have it at her house (its pretty big size). My mom's family is having a small shower at my Grandma's nursing home, so she can be with us. My friends shower will be at one of my friends house. And my Dad's & step Mom's family is having a welcoming shower/party after the baby is born at a small cafe, which my parents friends own. We haven't set a date for that one, but its in a very small town, so it shouldn't be a problem.

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea for you to book something soon if you go that route.

  • My sister is having mine at a local church. Its only 35 dollars to rent for the day. Plus you can bring in your own food so no extra costs. 700 seems like a lot of money for a shower
  • I am having one at work and then one at my house a couple of my friends are throwing it for me
  • I know my mom is throwing it (maybe with help from sister) but don't know of the details. I'm sure they will try to keep it a surprise!

  • My showers will be at the hostess's homes. $700 seems like a lot of money to shell out to rent a place just for a baby shower. Is there a reason you're looking into renting a place? Is space an issue? If so, do you have a church you go to? Or a family member's church? You could always use their fellowship hall.

Just an idea. I just can't see spending that kind of money like that - I'd rather it go towards stuff for the baby, or a college fund or something!

  • My BF is throwing one, so it'll be at her house. The other is going to be for work...still don't where thats going to be
  • My shower will probably be at my house because I have a HUGE livingroom (but small bedrooms so don't be jealous lol).  Not only that but my SIL is painting a mural on the nursery so I want everyone to be able to see that.  I'm due in September and will probably have the shower at the end of July or beginning of August

  • My mom, MIL and SIL are throwing mine and they're doing it at my mom's house. They are just doing it open house style which should be fun!
  • DH's family is having it, probably at MIL's house.  It will take place after baby is born, after I move back to WA.

  • In the town where my mom lives there is this beautiful park where a stream goes by. We're reserving the picnic area and we're going to BBQ since it's in July.

With Babyshower #1, we had it at a local hotel's banquet room. I think we paid $200 for 3 hrs. It was a nice room, but ended up being cramped in there because of all the tables.

  • Dont get me wrong, I dont think I can justify spending $700 for a shower. Also, I am not throwing the shower myself but I do live in a central location for all of mine & my bf's friends and family. My mom is hosting the shower but is unfamiliar with the area that I live in so I am trying to find a place that would be central (besides my house). I think the church is the way to go AND my next door neighbor is a church!! So thanks to all of you ladies for your advice. This is my first time and I do not like parties and/or things to be done especially for me...But I agree, If someone is spending $700 I would much rather it be on the baby!
  • I have some friends and family who have offered to do it, none of them have mentioned anything seriously yet...but I want to have an open house at my house.  Hopefully the nursery will be ready and then whoever wants to help throw the shower can bring food dishes.  Then I wont have to cart gifts around...Im hoping that its not rude for me to suggest this when someone else offers a shower for me.  So far they have all thought it was cool...then again none of them have called to set a date or anything either.

  • One of my showers will be at a county park, I think there's a nominal fee to hold the site (like maybe $20). It'll be the end of May in San Diego, so the weather will be beautiful. My other shower will probably be at my work, so that's free.
  • I find that shower location (both baby and bridal) varies greatly by region.  My friends from the Northeast are used to having showers in restaurants, and find it kind of cheap to have them at someone's house.  Whereas in the South, we only ever have them at people's homes and if someone were to host a shower at a restaurant, people would think she was rude because she didn't want to open her home to her guests!

Anyway, as I said -- we do showers in people's homes, so that's where mine are!

  • My friend is going to rent a huge white tent and have it in the garden at the university from where we both graduated this June. That might be a great idea for you, if you're connected to a college or other institution with some kind of banquet room (or outdoor facility, depending on the time of year). Usually, if you're an alum, they'll give you a huge discount or rent it to you for free (especially if there aren't any other events going on that day). We're getting the space for free, so my friend is only having to pay for the decorations, catering, and so forth.

I'm not sure how much my friend is spending on everything, but I offered to pay for the total cost, which she denied. She's wanting to foot the bill, so I'm trying really hard to accept that (I hate expecting other people to pay for me). I know she's renting a tent, having wildflowers brought in for centerpieces, and getting a catering company to do light finger foods.

You can do a lot on a small budget, though. With my DS's shower, I paid for and planned everything myself, and I didn't spend that much (maybe $250 or $300). We hosted it in my grandmother's home, which had ample room for the 30 or so guests I'd invited. I bought finger foods from a little cafe nearby and a few bouquets of flowers from the market. I also hand-made the invitations. So, it can be done on a small budget...it's just all on how much time you want to spend doing it yourself (or having others help). GL! I'm sure it will be beautiful!

  • We are having mine at my house since it is big enough to fit everyone.  Usually we have stuff at my sisters, but she just had kid number 3 so her house is a litle hectic right now.  I think that my MIL and Mother are making the food too since they are both great cooks.
