Please tell lytedark about amber teething necklaces.

If we behave and play nice, she might start making them for us.  But, she needs more info.  Would you mind sharing what you know about them in this thread?  Please?

=)

Re: Please tell lytedark about amber teething necklaces.

  • Sure!  They're made from Baltic amber.  Baltic amber contains succinic acid, which is a natural anti-inflammatory/analgesic.  They work because the skin heats up the amber and the oil is released directly onto the skin to be absorbed.  The lighter/cloudier the amber, the more succinic acid it is supposed to contain.

And I totally think you should make them!

  • thank you!!!  and anyone who lurked on my previous post with glad i will say i did a quick google and have since realized that you don't all have your kids chewing on necklaces!  Embarrassed  i swear it was like a cartoon lightbulb lit up above my head when i saw a picture of a kid wearing one and the brief explanation.

but to those that use them - what kind of clasp do you find the most ideal as far as easy of use/safety etc.. i imagine that would be your biggest concern

  • Ours has a screw clasp, which I like a lot.  Its not a pain for me to get on DD but its sturdy enough that she cannot undo it herself.  I also like that its knotted between each individual bead, in case it breaks.

  • What about a magnetic clasp? DS is always pulling on my necklaces AND he breaks them. The magnetic clasp would hopefully give way as to not break the chain.

i was wondering about that - whether magnetic clasps would be better because of the 'break away' aspect (forgive me for comparing these to my kitty collars!  lol) - but wasn't sure how practical it is when in use.  would the  baby just pull the necklace off all the time?

i suppose if i were making them i could always offer a choice of clasp since mothers know their LO's habits best?

  • I had a screw clasp one and I liked it alright but it's a pita to put on a squigly child. The magnetic ones are the kind I see most often. I think they're pretty much always knotted between the beads in case of breakage too.

They definitely can be used for adults. I've seen all kinds of of adult type bracelets, anklets and necklaces.

I believe that the lighter the amber the more pain relieving properties it contains. So milky amber is best and dark green and blood red amber is least effective. Standard amber is somewhere in the middle.

Also in my experience there are different qualities of amber. I know that several of us got a bit screwed by a seller who's necklaces seemed to do squat but there's a seller that everyone else raves about that I'd been thinking about trying. I would love to buy from a nestie!
