if you did cereal in the bottle for reflux

please teach me how you transitioned to solids and stopped putting the cereal in the bottle. My pedi is no help at all. I'm afraid that if I take the rice out of the bottles he'll start puking a lot again and then I won't be able to tell if it's still the reflux or if he's having a reaction to the solids.?

Re: if you did cereal in the bottle for reflux

  • We still add cereal to her bottles and we are on stage 2 and some finger food.

just curious, why are you wanting to stop adding it?

  • We just slowly started reducing the amount of cereal we put in each bottle.  It was a long process, but we started with 1 teaspoon per ounce in the beginning and slowly cut it back.  Just this past week we are no longer putting any cereal in his bottle.  You will notice if you are doing it too fast or if its not bothering him at all...my pedi never rec'd decreasing it either, we just decided to do it on our own and see what happened.  Worst case scenario you put it back in the bottle.  The more we've been giving him solids the less he seemed to need in the bottle (aka he wasn't finsihing the bottle anymore)...HTH!

  • DS outgrew his reflux at about 6 months.  We started phasing the rice cereal out of his bottle at about 8 months.

Keep the cereal in his bottle while you start solids.  There's no harm in it.

  • We put rice in DS's bottles and still feed him solids - we just don't do any additional cereal - just veggies, fruit, meat.
