Pregnant after 35

Dreading being weighed

I have my 20 week appointment in a few hours and I'm pretty sure I've gained 20 lbs already.  I feel like a fat cow and my bump isn't even that big?so I can't blame it on that. Ugh!

I'm dreading this appointment so much now after stepping on the scale this morning. Why did I do that?  I still have a little over 20 weeks to go... I'm worried about my weight now. And I honestly don't go crazy, but I guess I'm eating the wrong things. :-(

Re: Dreading being weighed

  • Girl.  Listen to me carefully.   If your doc is not on your butt about this?   DON'T LOOK AT THE NUMBERS.   I *wish* I'd only gained 20.. lol!     I freaked at the last visit, and the doc said "do you hear me yelling at you?"    I said "no but GOOD GOD"..    She said "i don't know how to break this to you, but you're having a BABY.   you're going to put on weight, and maybe a lot of it.   Your blood pressure is PERFECT, your blood work has been PERFECT, your heart rate PERFECT.    if you need to start worrying I'll tell you, but in the mean time, if you want to make yourself nuts?   Start looking at prices for gym memberships for after the baby.. "

LOL!!   I do love my doc.    Worry about your health and your little one's health.    If neither are in jeopardy?   Enjoy the fact that you can indulge in some ice cream now and again at the moment, & deal with your butt later :)

  • I've already gained about 12 pounds....and I'm just entering my 2nd tri!!  Yikes!! My Dr doesn't seem concerned so I try not to be...I also think that some of it may be the constant constipation I lug around with me.  We will lose it after the baby is born.....
  • Christine... thanks for the laugh. I truly did LOL!

I'm just finding it hard to cope with gaining weight. I've been pretty focused on maintaining my weight loss (36 lbs on Weight Watchers in 2002) for the last 7 years and it's hard to switch gears and get used to gaining.

I'm only up 15 lbs since my first prenatal visit?but I am up 20 lbs since my wedding last June. And while I know I'm supposed to gain, I wish I was one of those women who have great metabolisms and only gain the 25 lbs or so. At least the nurse and doctor didn't yell at me. Whew.

And, Jenn, I hear ya on the constant constipation.

And it was good to hear the baby's heartbeat... especially since I'm not really feeling movement yet.  My OB made me feel better, saying some first-time moms don't feel it until close to 24 weeks. I just hope I feel it sooner.

  • You migh be pleasantly surprised. At my last appointment at 23 weeks I was sure I was going to get a lecture from the doctor on my weight. I've been eating anything and everything (and 80% has been junk) since I got PG. (Okay, I pretty much eat anything I want to eat before I was PG.) I feel huge and told my DH that I was getting in trouble.

Come to find out that I only gained 9 pounds! Less than average! I still think the scale was wrong and I can't figure out how that's possible.

Listen to Christine. She is very wise.

Besides, you may not have gained as much as you think. My belly is massive and I keep swearing I'm packing on the pounds, but I've only gained 4 so far. Doesn't change how big I am and how even my first round of mat stuff barely fits anymore though.

  • Thanks again. :)

Unfortunately I have gained 15 lbs am up 20 since my wedding. But I'm dealing and will try to eat better?so if I continue to gain more than I should, at least it's from healthy foods and not junk (like the McDonald's I had last week).

  • Sweetie- i GET the WW thing.... I lost 65 lbs on jenny craig before my first girl, and gained 55 with her.    I lost 35, and fought the last 20, and it kind of hung around...and I'm up again now.. god.. 40 already.

Know what?   it'll come off.   I swear.   You're not being irresponsible and having hersheys for breakfast (are you?   - if so, GO GIRL. lol!), you're having a baby.    If you're planning on breastfeeding?    That helps like crazy, and if not?   You'll be amazed at how much is extra water that will nearly go on it's own.

Make the plan as to how to deal with it after.    I already told my husband (and then nurse at my OB who laughed her ass off) that I have a date with Nutrisystem on May 11th.   DH said "oh good.   Post partum depression, an infant, a toddler, AND you dieting.   Won't my life be GREAT."

    BWAHAHAH!!

    Christine

  • Christine,

You are seriously awesome. Thank you soooo much for talking me down from my weight obsession (and I know it's not healthy). We really do need to meet up for lunch someday.

And, alas, no... I'm not having Hershey bars for breakfast. Generally it's just cereal and, when I get to work, half a corn muffin. I just was BAD last week (had a Big Mac for the first time in 8 years) and noshed like there was no tomorrow. But chocolate sounds good right about now. ;-)

I'll breastfeed and get back to WW and will get back in shape eventually. Feeling better now than I was earlier. Thanks again.

  • Hi Robyn-

I am with you! I've gained 14-16 and I am only at 13 weeks. We can do WW together after we deliver our healthy, happy babies! Smile And Christine...I AM having Hershey's for bfast Embarrassed - trying to get better....baby steps! Smile

  • Christine is so right! I'm only 5'2" and gained over 40 lbs with DD (I stopped getting on the scale after 40). I was amazed at how quickly it came off between having the baby, BF'ing, and just moving again like a normal person.

Hang in there, and enjoy! It's so hard to make the shift from focusing on losing weight to gaining, but at this point, weight gain is a good thing. I know for me, walking daily really helps me keep things in perspective because I know I'm doing something good for me and for Little One.

  • Robyn - I completely understand you with the ww thing.  I was a lifetime member also.  I lost 25 lbs kept it off for years until getting engaged and married.  I was trying to get back to goal before getting pg.  It didn't work.  I am so stressed about my weight since i was over my goal weight before I was pg.  I was half running a lot and still over goal.  I did 7 halfs last year.  I was really worried about my last appointment weight gain.  It actually was a lot better than I thought.   I had only gained 4 lbs and 6 overall.  My docs until this last visit made sure they weren't telling me my gains.  i actually kind of liked that,  This time i brought it up with my doc.  we talked about weight and what I should gain based on my starting weight.  He told me not to stress it.  I was doing great and it's okay to gain.  I am actually glad I am not attending WW meetings right now.  I think I would go crazy watching points.  my doc was said he expects most people to gain during pregnancy.  He said if I weighed  300 lbs then he would talked to me about weight gain.  He made me feel a lot better.  I think once you have this baby you will do great on WW.  Since you already achieved lifetime you know how to do it.  I figure I will be back the week after I have mine.  I just got a letter saying they miss me.   Good luck and don't worry.  You are doing great.

  • I'm a lifetime member of Jenny Craig, so trust me I know what you're going through, but because I am pregnant and (like all of us) it took me while to get here, I'm eating the best I've ever had...ever!  Everybody has actually commented on how good i'm doing,  and I told them that it wasn't for me, but for the little guy.  I've gained about 15lbs so far, but I have a seriously BIG belly!  I don't know where the kids hiding, but he's in there somewhere.  I actually got the best compliment from a male co-worker the other day, he said that I was the first woman that he'd ever met that didn't gain an ounce...I was like "I LOVE YOU, DUDE!"... of course I would have preferred to hear this from my husband, but oh well.....LOL

but in all seriousness, I'm definitely NOT on a diet, but I just eat much, much better and more so during the day and I think that helps my metabolism burn off more as well. I'm sure you think you put a lot on, but you didn't and hey, even if you did, you're feeding another human being, enjoy it !  :o)

  • Don't stress about the last 20 weeks, just concentrate on the next 20 weeks. Remember... High protein, low fat and carbs. If you follow that, you shouldn't gain too much more.

    Debbie

  • Oh Debbie- if you didn't gain a bunch in the last 20 weeks, I think you must be the miracle mommy!    Thats usually when the weight comes on for most of us, especially in the last 10 weeks, but it ISN'T a big deal.   I am finding i'm so busy in the weeks after the baby?   (I took to mall walking with the little squirt last time) that a good portion came off fast.

    Christine

  • Robyn, this is the one time in your life that you can really use the excuse of the baby making you gain weight. You lost the weight before-YOU CAN do it again.

Too bad they don't have a special class or support group at places like WW on nutrition during pregnancy. I'm not having any problems, BUT I was kinda crazy my first trimester, logging down everything I ate, trying to see if I am lacking nutrition somewhere. Hey-have you tried adding alot more fruit to your diet, for the constipation.

PS- I have been to Mcdonalds 3 times since becoming pregnant, that is more than how many times I've been there in the last 10 years. I had a quarter pounder! You just put me in the mood for a Big Mac.

Christine, mall walking sounds very dangerous to me. (lots of temptations)

I was just saying if Robyn doesn't think she has been eating well, she should try to eat better now. Trust me, with my son I gained 40 lbs and I was already very over weight.

  • I have been eating healthy and exercising regularly my entire pregnancy, and have gained 60 lbs (I am 5'11).  My stats, and baby's stats are perfectly normal/healthy and I refuse to worry about it while I'm pregnant.  I am due in a few days and once I deliver I will take time to heal, get in the groove of motherhood, and THEN figure out the weight thing.  Life is too short, and babies are too precious to worry about the little things.  You know?  Good luck!
