Is your docter's word always LAW?

Based on past post I'm just wondering how often you question your doc. I am constantly questioning my docter, simply because that's just my personality. With my last pregnancy, I was seeing the same two docter's throughout the entire pregnancy and ended up going into delivery with someone completely different, because they were both out of rotation at the time. If I didn't do my research and ask my questions, I would've been comepletely freaked out. We see alot of med mal cases where I work, and alot of them are because patients just completely trusted the docter's opinion or felt that since they went to medical school they knew better. What I've learned is to trust your instincts! If you are wondering, it won't kill you to ask them. That is thier job, to answer all your questions and concerns. And for the first time parents, this is only the begining, when your child comes, you are thier number one advocate, as babies and when they enter school age. You can't just "trust" that someone has a degree in something, that they know better than you. Do your research, and don't be afraid to ask questions, and get a second opinion if you still aren't sure. It's your right.

  • no - I trust my doctor but I do not BLINDLY TRUST him.  I am a big believer in being your own advocate - and while I do not have a medical degree - I have a degree and I am an intelligent human being capable of doing research etc.  Some doctors are way old school & don't necessarily follow the latest information.....

  • I have switched docs and gotten second opinions before.  I don't trust the word of one person especially if I disagree with their opinion.  So glad I have done so in the past.

DD was being treated with too many antibiotics and they weren't addressing the problem.  New doc saw right away what the problem was and DD has been much healthier since the switch 5 years ago.

  • I certainly do my research so I can be an informed patient, but when it comes to medical decisions, I trust my doctor.  She has a lot more experience than I do and if she suggests something, I'm going to follow her advice.  If I didn't trust her, I would have chosen a different practice.

This exactly! ?If I didn't trust my doctors I would not hesitate to switch practices.?

  • While I trust my care givers I also research almost all advice that is given to me to see if its a good fit for our situation/scenario. I trust them to give me the options I need to hear as a guideline and then we make our own decisions from there. I can not simply say "I trust them they know better than I do." I'm sure thats true for the most part, but nobody knows me better than me.

That being said, double and triple checking does not always guarantee that you'll avoid medical complications. Its a crap shoot and all we can do is our best to avoid any unfortunate situations.

  • Yes I agree with you 100%!!!  You are your own advocate.  Ask questions and don't be intimidated by the degree or the white coat.
  • I definitely trust MY OB.  I really like all of the others in the practice, but I don't have the same level of trust that I have with my main OB.  If I see another one for a routine visit, I always follow up anything they said to me with asking my OB when I see her for my specialized visit - so, yeah, I'm a bit repetitive in the office!

My old pedi.....I actually stopped trusting that office and switched.  I trust this office more, but, after the last experience, I'm a little leery about everything.

My family doctor.....I guess he's good for an ingrown toenail or a sore throat.  I'm happy I have a PPO because I just go right to a specialist.  I trust my gastro unconditionally.  I think I trust my hematologist.....I got pregnant and we had to put that treatment on hold.

I do not trust Dr. Google.  Dr. Google is scary.  :-)

LOL... too funny!  Sometimes too much information can be a bad thing too.

  • I've had a bad OB/GYN experience and switched.  I've also had a bad pediatrician experience and switched.  Being an informed patient has saved me a lot of heartache and frustration(pedi) and possibly my fertility and sanity (ob/gyn).  I have a degree, I know my body, I also research the kinds of questions to ask so I'll be more informed when I have an appt.  My current OB/GYN does have my entire trust.  She proved that with a very difficult delivery of DD.
