Breastfeeding

Is there any way to increase my hindmilk?

DS has been having green poops for a couple of days (although he's also going through a growth spurt - could the two be related?).  In my reading it seems that he's not getting enough hindmilk - but I'm leaving him on each breast for a very long time, often he'll only do one breast per feeding - and each feeding usually lasts about 20 minutes.

I've noticed when pumping also, that I seem to get much more foremilk than hindmilk - my breasts respond much better to the "stimulate" function on the pump, than the "sucking" function.

Is there a way to increase just my hindmilk? I feel like I have an adequate supply otherwise, and I don't want to get engorged - I just want to increase the quality/balance of my milk.

Re: Is there any way to increase my hindmilk?

  • The LC told me to make sure that i was eating a lot of healthy fats to increase my hind milk.  Also, she has mentioned several times that there is nothing wrong with the twins having green poops.  i dont know if this would work for you but early on i would pump some off before i fed the babies at the recommendation of the LC so that they could get to the rich hindmilk earlier in the day.  HTH!

  • The fact that you get more milk during the letdown phase of the pump does not mean that you are getting more foremilk if that's what you mean?

You don't produce foremilk and hindmilk.  You produce milk.  Between feedings, your milk moves toward your nipples and most of the fat stays behind, therefore your baby gets the foremilk first and gets the hindmilk by emptying your breast.  You can't increase your hindmilk, you can only increase your milk in general.  You may have a low supply, but might be doing just fine...

Is your baby having frequest wet diapers...and gaining weight?

I wouldn't worry about it then.  Sounds like you're doing great.  Just make sure you eat enough and eat healthy (coming from someone who really doesn't eat healthy) and drink plenty of water.

  • I was wondering the same thing, but thanks PP for that info! I asked DSs ped about his green poop and she said she wasn't worried about color as long as it's not hard.
