Getting rid of the paci

We're trying to ditch the paci but it's not going so hot. The cold turkey thing isn't working (I can't let him scream for an hour) so I'm looking for some clever ideas. If anyone has one, I'd love to hear them. TIA!

Re: Getting rid of the paci

  • When is he using his paci?! All day long or at nap/night time only? At Paige's 18 month check up I asked our pedi about this because I wanted Paige to get rid of it.  She said "well give it to her only at nap and nighttime."  I said "We arlready do that!"  She said "GREAT!  Most denist will tell you not to push it until they are around three because you don't want a thumb sucker - it is a lot harder to take away and a lot harder on the teeth!"  So since she only uses it in bed we are going to let it go a little while longer until she can understand what we are telling her "we are going to mail your paci's to babies that need them because you are now a big girl"  Something like that!  GL!

  • ds did not hold onto the binki but i saw this on supernanny.  with ds, collect all the paci's in an envelope and mail them off to the Paci Fairy.  make it like a big boy thing and include him in on dropping them in the mail box.  don't know how that would work but it sounded like a good idea.

  • Thanks! I should have metnioned that he only gets it nap & bedtime. It's good to know the dentist view on it because our pedi told us a while ago he shouldn't have it past two. I like the dentist's opinion better!

  • I've heard if you cut just the tip of the paci off, it loses its "suction" and doesn't work the same... so the idea is that they lose interest on their own once it's no longer soothing to them as it used to be... but I have no idea if it works or not b/c I'm too chicken to try it yet!  LOL  :)
  • DH and I agreed that we were not going to buy anymore. DD was down to one paci or "bug" and once it was lost, we were all done with them. Well that dreaded night happened. We were putting her down for the night and could not find the "bug". She was crying "Buggy. Buggy". DH and I were panicking! Well, she fell asleep without and we never looked back. For a couple of nights she would cry a little until she drifted off. But has been fine for several months now. Now when she sees a baby with one, she points and says, "Me-Me no buggy".

  • DD was addicted to her paci..and we cut the end off of it.  She realized it was broken and lost it's effect like pp mentioned.  She slept with it in her crib the 1st night, but after that she voluntarily threw it in the garbage and quit herself...that was over a month ago!  Good luck!
