i haven't started pumping yet but had to pump this morning out of desperation when one boob got wayyyyy engorged. i only pumped for maybe 5 mins to get the edge off but only got about a 1/2 ounce. when i do start pumping (getting ready to go back to work) how long does it usually take? i have the medela advanced whatever its called pump - the backpack. is it diff for everyone? i haven't jumped into researching pumping yet - still trying to figure out this bf'ing thing!
Re: how long to pump?
if you are pumping just to relieve engorgement, you should only do it for a VERY short time. otherwise, your body is going to get the signal to produce more milk--- and you will get more engorged etc etc. also don't look at what you get from pumping and compare it to what your baby gets, especially this early. your milk is hardly regulated yet.
when i pump just to build a stash i do it for about 15-20 minutes.
oh and my LC told me not to pump at all (for stash building) until 3 -4 weeks. It screws with your supply regulation until then. soo if you can hold out, you should.
