While I love the Southern Vampire Mysteries (the books that True Blood is based on), Sookie is a truly awful name.
It's not even really a name. It's a very, very Southern nickname for sister -- like the feminine equivalent of Bubbah.
So, if you really, really want to call your child Sookie, you could name her whatever you want, then just call her Sookie for "sister" (I suppose you'd really need to have a second child first so that she'd actually *be* a sister).
Also, to those that suggested Suki -- they're two different names. I *think* Suki is pronounced more like the beginning of soup -- sou-key. Sookie is pronounced so it rhymes with cookie.
I don't like Sookie (mainly because I hear the guy from True Blood in my head saying it with that breathy Southern accent), but I do like Suki (from Gilmore Girls). It's pronounced slightly differently. Sookie is like "cookie" but with an S, Suki is like "Sue-key"
I keep thinking of "Suki, suki now" too. I also watched the Gilmore Girls and thought it kind of fit the character on the show. However, IRL, it is not a good name. It is awful. I would hate my parents if they named me Sookie. As a nn? Fine, if that's what you prefer. As a forma name? Heck no.

Sookie was on Gilmore Girls too. It fit her but I kinda don't dig it.
That's who I thought of.
Same here. I don't know this for sure, but I always thought her name was spelled Suki (at least, that's how I always pictured it). Sookie sounds like a family nickname, one that even the kid's friends don't use. It always looks like "nookie" to me, which can only lead to teasing in the adolescent years...
Re: Sookie??
Sookie was the name of my little brother's imaginary friend when he was a kid.
He was 4. I have no idea where he dreamed up that name...lol.
I don't like it one bit though. Sorry.
It doesn't work for me. Honestly, it sounds like a name for a pet or for livestock.
Can you come up with a different name to be her legal name and refer to her as Sookie only at home?
I am also trying to imagine the 'Honorable Sookie Anderson'. Or, 'President Sookie'. Doesn't work for me.
That's who I thought of.
When I first saw the post I thought you were asking about sookie as a nn. I think it is an awful first name.
Can't believe no one has mentioned King Floyd's "Groove Me" (one-hit-wonder from the early '70s).
"Huh! Aww, sookie sookie now!"
me, too. I like it better spelled "Suki"

Sookie is how Sookie St. James, the character on Gilmore Girls, spells it. Kooky and Sookie rhyme. Also, Suki looks very asian to me.
Still, it's not a good first name.
ditto
How'd you get a Nesticle at 5052 posts?! Were they handing them out and you were first in line??
