? for those with a deep freezeer stash

My milk is stored at my grandmother's house (next door) in her deep freezer. Last night, she told me she has to clean it out because there's ice around the edges of it. She said she has to "defrost" it. I told her I didn't know if that would be a good idea because of my milk, and she replied, "We can just put it in the regular freezer." First off, I dont' think it will fit in the regular freezers unless they're completely empty. Second, I wonder if that will affect my milk. The oldest milk is from early Feb. So, my questions:

1. Do deep freezers need to be "defrosted" because of the ice buildup? (I've always seen ice in them..I thought it was normal)

2. Will transferring my milk to a regular freezer for a couple days mess it up any? (I understand that theoretically it is good for 3 or so months in a regular freezer, but will going from a deep freezer to a less cold one have a negative affect on it)

I don't think it's necessary, and I really don't want to take the chance (I have close to 1000 oz in there!!). But, I don't own a deep freezer, and this issue certainly isn't on kellymom. :) What do you think? Thanks.

  • I don't have an answer for you, but just wanted to say holy crap!  That's awesome that you have such an enormous stash of milk!

  • Thank you. I EP, so it's very valuble to me. I always worry about drying up.
  • Instinctually I would say it would be fine to move to a normal freezer until the deep freezer is defrosted/cold again. Just make it as quick a process as possible.

It's quite normal to defrost deep freezers and even normal household fridges with the weirdo old school top door freezers. If there is too much ice buildup it doesn't cool as well. So you unplug let it defrost (might as well clean it too) and then plug it back in until it's cold again and off you go.

  • its fine to move over to a regular freezer for a couple of days. no worries.

  • Some deep freezers have an auto defrost but older ones do need defrosted...some people do it once a year and others every other year.  When we bought our deep freeze I made sure to get an auto defrost so that ice doesnt build up...

I would think and this is a guess...but frozen is frozen as long as its below a certain temp.  so you may want to waste your freezer items and transport the milk to your freezer...That sucks, but you may want to look into your own deep freeze they have very small ones that are not too pricey!
