I've heard that its cheaper to buy a new chair. :-( I have the old recliner/rocker that my mom rocked my sister and me to sleep in as babies... its DISGUSTING... but I needed to have it. Our plan was to have it reupholster it, but a friend suggested trying to steam clean it first... so we're going to try that....

It depends on your area, the fabric you choose, the type of chair. Some furniture isn't worth reupholstering. Unless it's a very high quality item to begin with, it will probably cost more to redo than to just buy a new similar piece. If you particularly love the chair but just don't like the current fabric on it, you might want to look into slipcovers, because they come in a huge array of colors/fabrics and cost a fraction of what reupholstering costs.?

Ugggg! I've been working on this dang chair forever including like 5 hours today. It is so hard. I agree with PP, everything I've heard says it costs more to get something reupholstered. To do it yourself, its pretty cheap. I'm reupholstering mine for about $70 (it's a large, plush rocker/glider)...bought it off craigslist for $100. It's good quality, but the material was NMS. However it's been such a headache. I rented a book from the library to help me figure it out. It's the sewing part that I'm finding the hardest and I've been sewing for quite a while. It's just difficult without a pattern. GL.

Unless you are doing it yourself ... it can be more expensive than buying a new already upholstered chair (quality dependent).
You could try doing it yourself though, I have never done it but I'm sure there are "dummy" books or online sources that can guide you.
