How about this -- what was most annoying during labor and delivery?

I'm not expecting but my friend is.  I just posted a question about boredom during labor but maybe this is more relevant:

What things did people say or do intending to be helpful, but really bugged the crap out of you while you were in pain during labor/delivery?

I know that we all react to things differently, but did anything get on your nerves?

Re: How about this -- what was most annoying during labor and delivery?

  • our families are out of state....they kept texting DH back while I was in labor since he was sending out text updates. It was kind of funny, but a little ridiculous when I was pushing.
  • Loading the player...
  • i would just say the whole child birthing experience is annoying in general.  puts a real cramp in my style.  lol pun intended.
  • If that bith A$$ nurse told me to quit pushing until the doc go there one more time I would have poked her eyes out with the hook they broke my water with!!

Also DH got really nervous and started rubbing my leg and about gave me an Indian rub burn haha I had to tell him to knock it off in the middle of a contraction.  Im sure I looked like the exorcist

  • My husband eating when I was starving. They won't let you eat anything and that jackass was enjoying himself.

    And people rubbing my head...

  • my DH was listening to music on his phone, so when I would have a contraction I would have to wait for him to get himself together before he could help me. ?I wanted to scream!!!, but something about labor made me calm, WTH!
  • Definitely L&D beds.  They suck!  My ass fell asleep while I was dilating.
  • When DH sat in front of the monitor and told me when big contractions were coming. Yeah, honey, thank you, but I can fee it. I was trying to keep my mind off of them.

  • It annoyed me when I was exhausted after pushing for an hour and my dr estimated that I had another hr of pushing left.

  • My dad kept saying "oh, are you having a contraction??" every time I would tense up and obviously be in pain.  And he kept trying to make me look him in the eye to relax.  I kicked him out... LOL

this AND he was able to see contraction charting of other rooms (no names but the graphs). he ACTUALLY said, wow the other woman's is worse than yours....lol!

  • i was very annoyed how casual and calm the medical staff was. i know they see over a dozen births a day, but this is my first one people! they were all just chatting it up, talking about snorkeling in the bahamas while i'm screaming and writhing in pain. it was like, i'm sorry to interrupt your conversation about what you made for dinner last night, but i'm trying to squeeze this baby out- shut the eff up!!!

also, DO NOT EAT OR DRINK in front of the laboring mother. torturous!!!

  • Def. the out of town relatives calling MY cell constantly. Um...hello?! I'm kind of in the middle of something here....
  • that even though i was suddenly puking and shaking and having contractions one on top of the other and basically all signs of transitioning no one checked me...i went from 4cm to complete in 30 min. BEFORE i got my epidural and prob. could have done without it had i known they would let me push...
  • people calling and texting my cell, I screamed at dh to rip the battery out of it because the sound of it was driving me crazy
  • DH kept saying "push harder, she's almost here!"

F YOU! Next time you get pregnant and push for 1.5 hours..we'll see how good of a job you do then.

Oh and my mom was holding a leg and kept rubbing it, trying to be supportive or something but it was really distracting and gross because I hadn't shaved that day. yuck.

  • OUCH!  I'll remember not to do this if given the opportunity.
  • Oh and the fact that DH got enough food to feed 10 people and ate it right in front of me while I only got ONE italian ice was pretty crappy.

  • My ILs being in the room while I was having intense, back-to-back contractions.  I asked DH to ask them to leave, and he never did.  I finally had to speak up for myself and ask them to leave.  I said, "I'm not trying to be mean, but I'm about to start cussing in a minute, and I'd really prefer it if you guys weren't in here to hear what's about to start flying out of my mouth."

As soon as that door shut, the expletives started flying.  I would've made some sailors blush.

The worst part is that they were laughing and talking loudly while I was having contrax.  They were also eating and rustling wrappers.  It made for a very bad experience.  Next time no one is allowed in the room - I don't even know if I want DH in there since he didn't help me at all anyway.

I'm still a little bitter about my labor experience, to be quite honest.

  • Oh, and my mother came to my room even though I told her I only wanted DH.  My blood pressure shot up while she was there.

My stupid BIL did this.  I wanted to tell him to STFU b/c I was well aware of the "big ones" since it felt like my uterus was about to explode.

  • Cell phone noise (ringtones, vibrations - turn the sh!t off).  Excessive talking from non-medical staff (no, MIL, I don't want to hear you praying).  Being touched by people other than DH and medical staff.
  • Getting a drunk dial on MY phone DH's coworker (who had started the week before!!!!!!)  He had heard via text that I was in labor and wanted to call to "see how I was feeling"... ummmm, like there a is teeny tiny person trying to crawl her way out of my vagina.  Thanks for asking.  Go have another beer.  I was 7cm and still without my epi.  Not cool.

ps-- DH was in the bathroom which is the only reason I even answered the phone.

  • I told the anesthesiologist I was going to puke, she was rude & said "no you're not" well I ended up puking down my shoulder since I was strapped down & continued during the entire delivery...ummm, I think I know more about what I am feeling than you do.

  • The number of day shift nurses that came in in the morning saying that they were going to be "my" nurse.  I think there were at least 4.  And the last one who wound up being my nurse seemed to forget about me for a few hours.
  • Oddly enough...the most annoying thing about labor was the oxagen mask. I HATED that thing.

Me too. This was def. the most annoying thing.. and the student nurse who kept holding it firmly to my face when I just wanted to hold it "close" to my face because it make me feel claustrophobic
  • 1) DH watching the contractions on the monitor & making comments like "Do you feel that?"

    2) DH yelling "push harder" while I was pushing!! I was pushing AS HARD AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE!!! I wanted to strangle him!!

  • Having the room right next to the waiting room.  Everytime the door would open I could hear my family hanging out and laughing.  I told DH he should go tell them to STFU, that it wasn't a party, but of course he wouldn't.

I was also annoyed because one nurse told me I could only lie on my left side and that any way else they lost the baby's heartbeat, a few hours later anothe nurse told me to get on my back, and I told her I was told not to and she said I had to switch positions.  Well wouldn't you know it less than 5 minutes later 3 nurses came flying into the room telling me to roll over and saying call the doctor!!  A few seconds later they found the heatbeat, but it all could have been prevented.  I spent the next 6 hours lying awake listening for his heartbeat.

  • Honestly, the only thing I was truly annoyed by was the fetal monitor I ended up having to wear.  Even though it was wireless, it bugged the heck out of me.  I can remember pushing and thinking "can I rip this sucker off now??"
  • Different nurses, residents, etc. asking the same questions over and over especially when they all wrote the answers down.
