My son will be 8 weeks on Tuesday. He was born six weeks premature. He still has not smiled. Is this normal? From what I have been reading babies usually smile around 6 weeks. TIA
DD was 4 1/2 weeks early and didn't really start smiling until 8 weeks or so. She smiles nonstop now. Totally normal. Give him a few weeks and I'm sure he'll be smiling all of the time.
from what i've read and from what our pedi has said, preemie babies may take a while longer to hit the milestones than term babies. parker didn't start smiling until he was a little over 2 months old.
Chaz was also 6 weeks early and he smiles but only in his sleep. I read that it is most likely gas that causes these "smiles".
He has yet to do it awake.
They do say that with milestone like this for premature babies you have to use their adjusted age. So for example Chaz was six weeks early so I have to add 6 weeks to milestones for full term babies. So if a full term baby should be doing a certain something by 2 months it would be normal for Chaz to not do it until he is 3 months and 2 weeks.
you should add 6 weeks to all milestone guidelines ... i.e., I wouldn't get concerned if he wasn't smiling at 12 weeks (another 4 weeks from now!!) ... but I might be a little worried if it was 16w and he still wasn't smiling.
ps, my DS1, who was only 3 weeks early, didn't smile until he was 11w old ... today, he's a perfectly social, smiling, laughing kid ... he's just a little shy and tends to be serious. So it could just be personality, too.
DD was four weeks early, and didn't smile for "real" until she was about 8 weeks or so. ?It's totally normal, and even in full-term babies, there's a range in ages. ?I wouldn't worry.
