Breastfeeding and I feel like I know nothing

So here I am on my fifth day of breast feeding, well of motherhood in general.

Daniel just ate for basically three hours. There were short breaks, but not many.

He has let a good few belches rip, so is this why he keeps eating, he keeps making room for more?

  • Cluster feeding is normal. So is the burping. Keep up the great job!

  • My Addie used to do this a lot in the first couple weeks, especially at night. They do it to up your supply.
  • Cluster feeding is what it sounds like. Is he using you as a pacifier?

  • My son ate 20-30 min out of every hour until my milk came in.  He's calmed down since then.

He still has days where all he wants is to be attached to the boob, but he's much more regulated about it.

  • hes probably cluster feeding and making your supply what he needs it to be. Hes probably also just sucking for comfort at times, newborns do that --thats why we intorduced a paci--he was killing me. GL and hang in there!!

  • Good work Momma---in the beginning, I felt like I spent almost all my days sitting on my couch, nursing DD, but now at almost five monthes, she is quick and efficient.  Right now, your baby is just helping your body make a good milk supply.  Get a good book, magazine, or something you like to watch on TV, and relax and enjoy this time with your LO...he'll be big before you know it!
  • imageThings will settle down.  Don't give up.  We've all been there.  Newborns do this in order to bring in your milk.  Also they go through growth spurts at around 3wks, 3mos, and 6mos when they feed a lot more so you'll produce more milk for them.

Don't get discouraged.....time really does fly

  • Thanks so much ladies! I think this board will be the one I'll use the most.

I'm trying to stay away from the pacifier. The second, third night I almost broke down, but now that things are getting better, I'm learning his cues -- eating, gas, diaper.

What an amazing experience and it's not even a week yet!

  • My advice would be to go with the flow (no pun intended) and don't try too hard to figure it out this early on.  Just let him do what he wants to do and follow his lead.  Things will become clearer and easier to understand over time.  I spent a lot of time worring about things that worked themselves out on their own/  GL
  • There will be many days when all you feel like you do is feed.  Keep on keeping on!
