Pregnant after 35

8 whole weeks - first appt. on Monday

Hi ladies,

It's 8 weeks today and my first appt is on Monday.  I'm just wondering if there is a check list for appointments once you're over 35?   I've heard about all the tests that need to be done and I don't know what else my dr. will recommend but I'm just wondering if you had any guidelines/must do's.  I'm hoping they do an ultrasound but I know a lot of the ladies say they don't have one till week 12 or so.  I'm 40 and a first timer if you couldn't tell.

Re: 8 whole weeks - first appt. on Monday

  • Congratulations!

I didn't know what to expect either being muy daughter is 7 yrs old.  This pregnancy is totally different now that I am 35.  I did purchase this book Motherhood After 35: Choices, Decisions, Options by Maggie Jones and it helped me out alot.  I had so many questions and decisions to make I didn't know what to do.  I don't know of any check lists, maybe some of the other ladies can recommend where to get one.

  • Did they give youa  folder of information that outlines the appts and nutrition?  Do you have the book, What to Expect When you are Expecting?  That helps a lot.

Ask your doc when you go in.  Tell her about yoru concern for tests and she/he should tell you all about your options available.

At 12, you can get an NT scan, and blood screen.  Then if you need further testing, there is a CVS test you can take.

Then after that period, I think you can get an amnio.  But I dont have the timelines for it.

  • Thanks everyone!  I do have the Pregnancy Week by Week for over 35 and its been really great too.  I'm sure they will give me some information on appointments on Monday.  So much to learn...
  • Hi GossipGirl- I am 40 and a first-timer, too. I hope you get an u/s at your first appt. I had one at 5 weeks and at 7 weeks. Good luck!
  • I'm 38 and I got an u/s at my 8 week appt. Honestly, no one treated me any differently than a 25 year old. My appointments have been scheduled the same as for a younger woman, the only difference is that I was recommended the amnio, which I will only do if my NT scan and bloodwork results are abnormal. I find out next week. If everything looks good, I'm skipping further testing and letting the pregnancy follow its natural course.

If you're healthy and your pregnancy is going well, then I see no reason to get too worried that you're over 35 or do invasive testing... unless you want to. GL with your appt!

  • I'm 38 too, and did have an ultrasound at my first appointment - it only lasted a few minutes (I guess that's normal) but it was soooo awesome seeing the heartbeat.  That was at 8 1/2 weeks for me, which was just last week.  The doctor asked us if we were interested in CVS and/or amnio since I am over 35 - but honestly, didn't know that much about either before reading on here, after my appointment.  I initially said yes, based on the risk factors she quoted to me - but as I think about it more - I'm going to definitely skip CVS.  She also gave me the option of the sequential screening which we are going to do - non-invasive and no risks.  Beyond that, I agree with what someone else said - she doesn't seem to be treating me any different than any other-aged woman - next appointment is in four weeks.  She said she does not consider 38 old, though it does increase some risks.
  • Gossip Girl - I should have said Good Luck, too!  This first appointment will be great - you will definitely feel more "in the know" when you leave there, plus hopefully you'll get to see/hear a heartbeat!.  You'll be in my thoughts tomorrow!

  • Congrats to you Gossip Girl!  (& all the other mommies too)  I'm a first timer at 39 and depending on the calendar I'm 7 wks & 5 days.  My first visit isn't until the 31st and I am hoping for the ultrasound too.  I can't wait to see my little blueberry!!  I've been bouncing around the web looking for info - WebMD, baby center, What to Expect, etc.  All of the sites are pretty much the same on info for mommies 35+. Not a ton of info, but I've just started doing my research.  Good luck with your appointment on Monday!

Lots of good wishes and happiness to you :)
