Tell me about your Provera experiences

My doc just prescribed me Provera after I did not get a full period following my 2nd IUI. I have never taken it before since my cycles are very regular and I googled it and I am scared of some of the horror stories I have found.  I was wondering what some of your experiences were with it?  I am thinking why not just wait until I get another period on my own since it will take a fews weeks to get one with the Provera anyway? I am so confused..I probably just need to call my Dr. back and ask him but I am finding he is confusing me more..today he was saying I could have had a early miscarriage or be pregnant and that he would not know until my bloodwork came back. Well the nurse just called me and just told me to take the Provera...no explaination nothing...so I am still clueless as to what happened!!!!

Re: Tell me about your Provera experiences

  • I have taken it before and had no problems or side effects from it at all. I usually get AF 2-3 days after the last pill. I know it can make some women tired, but I took it before bed anyways.

  • I have better luck with Prometrium. ?Fewer side effects than Provera. ?Provera makes me really emotional, tired, achey and bloated.

My period usually arrives 2-3 days after the last pill is finished.?

  • I have taken Provera 9 times and honestly it has sucked every time.  I know lots of girls don't get any side effects, and I hope you are one of them! :)  I get super emotional (read:  sad) while taking it.  It also totally wipes me out.  However, it has always worked for me in that I get my period about 3 days after the last pill (except for once where it took a week).  Good luck to you!

  • I take Provera often and have never had any trouble with it. I take the 10 mg dosage for 10 days. AF usually shows 2-3 days afterwards and lasts for about a week.

But if your doctor thought that you could be pregnant, you may want to go ahead and test just to be certain.

  • PMS in pill form!!!!!!!!!  DH wanted to move to the shed while I was on it.  Witchy, b*tchy, cranky, crying, bloating, moody, crampy, depressed---all PMS symptoms...I would say from 3rd pill until AF was over.  But on the other hand, I got AF 3 days after last pill.  I have taken it a few times and the last time in December (around Christmas) was extremely rough, didn't help that SIL announced she was preggers then!

I would take it again if need to, I will set up a bed and TV in the shed for DH and the pup.  Hey at least it has electricity and two windows.

  • Thanks girls! I am definitely not pregnant for they did bloodwork on me today...I guess I will give it a shot!
  • Hi Lola,

I've had to take Provera several times and I don't get negative side effects.  I just take it for 7 days straight and usually 3 days later I get AF.  I asked the nurse practitioner who prescried it what are the side effects and negative effects on my body and she said it's basically progesterone and is safe for your body.  She tells me to take a HPT before I start Provera just to be sure I'm not pregnant (which I already know from charting).  I haven't had any problems.  If you know you aren't pregnant I think it's safe to take.  Hopefully you wont experience the side effects that some women do.

     Good luck!

  • I am taking provera right now. It really is one of my least favorite things. I get bloated, tired, emotional, but it works and I can live with the side effects even though I don't like them.
  • i've never had any side effects from it.  for me, af usually starts 2 or 3 days after i finish the meds.  however,  it can take up to 2 weeks for some people to get af after they've taken the last pill.

  • I've been lucky so far. No real awful side effects. I got bloated, but that's it. I also get AF 2-3 days after my last pill. Good luck! :)

  • Provera makes me a nutcase.  Seriously, I cry every 5 minutes and hate life while on it.  However, I may be in the minority, as I've had friends on it who have had little to no side effects.  Disclaimer-I am usually an emotionally stable person, so it really freaks me out when I can't stop crying or start crying for no reason; such is the case on provera.
