I think it depends on the strength of your trigger, your metabolism, weight, etc. I had Ovidrel this month, and my RE didn't say how long it would take, but I tested it out and it was gone after 9 days. 17 days does sound long to me, though.
I did an Ovidrel trigger on Monday, 3/2 and it was out of my system by Saturday 3/7 or Sunday 3/8.
I've seen some girls say that it's still in their system around 8dpo...so maybe they just want to convince you to wait that long so that you don't get a false bfp? Like, if they told you 14dpo, you might be tempted to test at 9dpo...so if they tell you later you're more likely to wait a little longer? kwim?
My dr didn't tell me anything about when to take a HPT, but I go for my beta 14dpo.
I also go in for a beta at 14dpo. Are you on progesterone supps? If not, you would likely get AF before 17 days. Just as a reference point, I tested out my trigger last cycle. I had 10,000ius of hcg and i still had a faint line at 10dpo (it was a BFN obviously). I am thin and have a very fast metabolism. Just depends on the person I guess, but I can't imagine it would still be there 17dpo.

my little ovidrel info sheet said it could stay in your system for up to 14 days, so don't test before then. but that's probably generous.
i haven't decided if i'll test it out or not. i think this cycle, i won't, and we'll see how crazy i go.
Because we're fancy like that.
it depends on how many units you got. i was given 10,000 units and was told the first day i could test was 14 days post trigger
the general rule is 1,000 units per day leaves the body but some women report that it's still there 13 days after trigger
