toddler-proof trash can?

We have a regular old kitchen trash can with the swinging part on the dome lid. It's tantalizingly at Adam's height, so a new fun trick is throwing away his toys (tough to see Sophie in there at her price) and pulling out stuff like the Doritos bag that was cheerfully presented to me this morning.

Do the kinds with the pedal work or can toddlers still lift the lids? And do the pedals really work? It seems that they always broke when we had that kind as a kid. And I don't want to spend $$$ for a Simple Human one either.

Does anyone have one that works? What's it like?

Re: toddler-proof trash can?

  • I love the tall stainless one I got at Costco (for like $30). It has a sensor that automatically opens. It's been great so far. However, I think when DS is taller and smarter, he'll figure it out just like anything else. We'll see.?

  • We have the SAME problem. I think we have the same can as you too. So easy for him to open it up throw stuff in or take stuff out. I was going through a BBB mailer that we got and they have a simplehuman Slim 40L Plastic Step Can for $39.99 which has a lid lock. I'm going to go there in person later or tomorrow to see if that would work to keep him out.
  • OOOH, you have to give me a report of that simple human one, please???
  • Ours is built into our cupboards so we use a child proof lock on the cupboard. You could try putting it under the sink maybe?

    Will do!

  • I almost cried when I bought my trash can, because of the price. ?I had one like you described until a couple of weeks ago. ?I was tired of finding soup cans and other stuff all over the house and in the backyard (the dogs and DS collaborate). ?I bit the bullet and used a 20% BBB coupon on a Simple Human can. ?Honestly the stress reduction is great, and hopefully I will never have to buy another garbage can. This is how I try to justify the ridiculous price.

  • I'm definitely interested in a review on the Simple Human lock one too! Post it in here please :)

We have a regular simple Human one ($100 but it was a shower gift!) and DD can easily lift the lid... she thinks it's the most hilarious game, so I'm all for finding a new trash can! And it's not like I could fit this one under the cupboards.. even if there was room ;)

  •  The Simple Human Slim 40L Plastic Step Can for $39.99 at BBB definitely works. It's easy to use, the lid stays locked and it's not ugly. AND it doesn't get filled with fingerprints like a stainless steel version would. We got the steel gray color and it's awesome. definitely a good purchase for toddler proofing the kitchen.
  • Nope - we have a stainless with the pedal and she has figured out how to push on the pedal to open it. She can also just lift the lid with one hand and dig around with the other.?

We've resorted to a piece of clear shipping tape to keep the lid down. ?A pain in the arse but effective! ?(and we use the clear tape because otherwise she notices masking tape / duct tape and pulls it off!)

  • we have the dark gray simple human trash can and it is awesome! and an awesome price at $39.99 for simple human. when dd tries to get into it i just close it and move the lock into place and she gets bored and walks away from it. later i could see a bigger toddler pushing it over since it is plastic but if the lid is locked then it should be okay.
