Crib mattresses...HELP!

Prices range from like $80-$400+...

I know how I sleep and what kind of mattress would suit MY needs, but how do I pick one out for the crib? I mean, what criteria am I supposed to use? Firm/not firm? plush? foam? spring? HELP!

  • I know pedi's recommend firm. I went with a foam mattress that was pretty firm and DD has used it since birth (2-1/2 yrs now) with no problems.

I am trying to find another like it for DS.

  • I read up on this when we were buying ours, and everything I've seen says that firm is better for the baby's back.  Also, the guy at the baby store said that more expensive isn't always better; in fact, the crib mattresses with the big recognizable names (Sealy, Simmons, etc.) aren't actually made by those companies, but by other companies who then pay Sealy & others to put their name on them - so you're not really getting a better product.  I think I also remember reading that the spring type is better, but if you Google the subject you should come up with some fairly good info.  GL!
  • I don't really see any need in spending $400. This is basically the one DS sleeps on and we've had no issues.

  • I've always heard firm is best.  We got this one:

We got this one too.  It's super light.  I can lift it with one hand if I need to.

And I love the fact that it has two sides of firmness.  highly rated in Baby bargains.

  • I got the Moonlight Slumber Starlight Support Supreme Foam Mattress (Extra Firm Infant side, Firm Toddler Side).  A lot of the moms on the Baby Bargains Websites love this mattress, and I bought it sight unseen through one of their online retailers.  My cousin with a toddler and a newborn came to my house to look at the nursery, and she kept commenting how nice the mattress is.  I think that I paid about $270 for it--it was not a big deal since my mattress is very nice and cost a bunch more.  It is not as rock hard as the Colgate mattresses, but the moms on Baby Bargains say that it is definitely firm enough for an infant.  HTH!
