Small newborns and carseat head supports?!

My DS is 6 lbs 5 oz His head will not stay upright in the carseat. I've tried 2 different kinds of headrests.  The BRU brand and the only other one they have its like a cradle hold thing that supposedly won a bunch of awards.

Neither works! his little head just bobs forward and it looks so aweful! Yesterday I stopped twice to readjust him and his little head just kept falling forwards. I cried the whole entire way home because it looked so painful!  Any suggestions?! I don't even want to go anywhere because of it!

Re: Small newborns and carseat head supports?!

  • Can you adjust the base of the car seat so the seat is more reclined? Maybe put a towel or something under the side closest to the back seat? I know when we had our car seat inspected with DD they told us not to use the head supports unless they came with the car seat. Basically they said we shouldn't have anything in the car seat that didn't come with the car seat.

  • You can try receiving blankets, too.

    Snuzzler worked okay for us.

  • We bought carseat strap covers with little moneys on them from Walmart. They helped to keep her head upright.

  • My dd's head support still doesn't help... I think to us it looks painful, but its not for them, or else they would cry.. I actually took mine out, b/c she was so hot and since it wasn't really helping anyway.. She seems to be more comfortable w/o it.
  • My baby was 6 pounds, 4 ounces and I had the same problem. Its just something he eventually outgrew. When H and I took him for car rides together, I would sit in back and sometimes hold his little head, as stupid as that sounds.

I tried this and it helps a little.

I think this is the problem. We have bucket seats in our SUV not bench and the seats kind of recline back at an angle.  I turned the nob on the base that is supposed to make it more flat as far as it would go and it didn't help :(  At this point I told DH I just want an SUV with FLAT bench seats lol.

The car seat has to have a 45degree angel for little babies. At the police station, when they installed my car seat they put something like a pool noodle to give it the right angle. HTH

How did they do that exactly?

My SUV has bench seats and we still needed to adjust the angle. Luckily the adjustable part on our Graco base was enough but if not we had a foam "leveler" that we bought at BRU.

  • We put rolled up receiving blankets on either side of him and it really helped him keep his head upright in the carseat. Try that before you buy something!

This is exactly what we bought and it worked great.  DD was even smaller than your LO, at 4.2 pounds, and the monkey strap covers kept her head upright.  I got them at Walmart too.

Ditto this!  The NICU team did this to our car seat as our DS was only 6lbs when we brought him home.  He's about 8.5lbs now and we still have them in.
