s/o thyroids...

Has anyone with hypo ever tried not taking medication and doing a more natural approach?

My mother recommended something she found online, a natural solution to synthroid. I like how synthroid improves my overall mood and of course my weight, but if I could do it without the expensive doctor bills it would totally be a plus. However, when she first sent me a link, my first thought was scam.

Thoughts?

Re: s/o thyroids...

  • I'm hypo but my TSH levels were borderline so my doctor put me on meds to see if I felt better - I didn't so he said I should probably hold off taking unnecessary meds.

However, both my endocronologist and OB/GYN said it was really important to stay on top of thyroid issues if I get pregnant.  They said while TTC it is not a huge deal since I am borderline - but that low thyroid function can lead to issues with a baby's development.

If you are not TTC yet, I would say try the natural solution but I would probably talk to my doctor about it first and still get b/w done occasionally to make sure that it hasn't gotten worse.

  • expensive doc bills?   does your insurance not cover it?

I pay $80 a year for my meds (3 months supply for $20)... and only have to see the doc for it once every few years.

but to answer your question:  no.  I have never heard anything about a natural approach.   I've been on the meds for 11 years.  It works for me.

  • Good point. I do need to get b/w so I can see where I'm at right now. We were just really going to start TTC, but with things that have happened recently, I believe that's going to be put on hold. So I guess now would be a good time to at least attempt the natural stuff, since "if there's no improvement, you get your money back." lol

This sounds a little scam-ish to me.  Do you have the link to the site?

My insurance right now is very basic, so it doesn't cover as much as I'd like, so I still have to pay a good portion. I pay about 30 a month for synthroid. Because it was somewhat recently diagnosed, I have to go to the doc maybe like two or three times a year to keep an eye on my levels.

  • If you are going to TTC I wouldn't try the "natural" approach without asking your OB's opinion on it. Sometimes natural supplements have other things in them that may not be the best to take while you are TTC. I'd probably set up an appt to talk to your doctor about it, get your levels tested again and see what he/she thinks is the best approach.

I'll have to see if I can find it, I'll get back to you....but yeah, that's why I am hesitant, but I thought it would be worth asking if anyone else has heard of any natural ways to deal with it.
