glass bottles vs. plastic?

I used plastic with DD#1 but I've been seeing a resurgence of glass bottles due to concerns over chemicals from the plastic getting into liquids served from plastic bottles.  In addition, since we are planning a few more babies after this one and glass will never wear out so it seems more cost effective as well....At this point I'm planning to opt for glass bottles.  Munchkin brand has new ones that I really like that you can buy silicone sleeves for to help hold and protect from breaking.  Just wondering if anyone else has thought about this and if anyone else is planning to go with glass?

Re: glass bottles vs. plastic?

  • We'll be using BPA free plastic.
  • Loading the player...
  • If you're worried about plastic, why not just buy the BPA Free?  Do people realize that plastic is practically in everything?  Your swing, boucer that they chew on, toys, etc will all be made of plastic.  I think people obsess over this way too much.

Step outside - you'll get cancer. It's getting more and more ridiculous.  Not that I think there is anything wrong against glass bottles. JMO though.

  • i am.  last year in school i did a project on epigenetics which happened to include studies on BPA and how it affects rat genes.  those exposed to bpa were a different color and obese.  i'd rather be safer than not.  i know i might get comments for being too uptight from some people i know...

I wouldn't say I'm worried about it.  I'm certainly not losing sleep and my daughter is perfectly healthy even though I used plastic with her.  I'm just saying that since it COULD POSSIBLY be a concern due to the bottle being heated over and over (it's the heat that they say generates the chemicals) AND that it seems more cost effective, I am going to go with glass. I'm sorry I said something that seems so obviously stupid to you! I'm not a person who is overly paranoid about things.  It's just that this is something new that I've heard and rather than educate me that there are BPA free plastic bottles you'd rather talk to me like I'm an idiot.  Thanks for that.

You realize that almost all baby bottles on the market are BPA free, right? BRU won't even sell ones that aren't. If you have other reasons for using glass that's fine, but there has really been a movement in the baby product industry to remove BPA.

Woah woah woah. Hang on a minute.  My remark wasn't being b*tchy towards you and I certainly didn't call you stupid.  I was giving my opinion, which you clearly asked for in your post.  It's my opinion that SOME people worry too much over this, and like a poster said, most bottles on the market are BPA free now.  If you want to use glass, go right ahead. Just like I said, I have nothing against using glass bottles.
  • We don't even use plastic for ourselves anymore, so I'm not sure how I feel about a plastic baby bottle.

And yes - lots of stuff baby will use will be plastic.  It's the heat from the dishwasher that is the problem with the reusable plastics.

I may consider using the plastic bottles that have the tossable inserts

Thanks for the clarification cuz when I read it, it did sound pretty b*tchy. I never said you called me stupid.  I said it sounded to me that you were talking to me like I'm stupid for not knowing there are BPA free plastic bottles.  Anyway, thanks for the clarification.  I appreciate it.  I feel better about it now.  I guess being pregnant may have me a little hypersensitive.

  • In addition, I think glass is also more environmentally friendly since they won't wear out and get tossed as frequently.  Yes, I recycle, use energy efficient light bulbs, etc. lol  I try to be as green as I can be. I am not crazy over it but I do try to do my part as well as I can.  Thinking of going with cloth diapers this time also...just not 100% sure yet.  Might do a mix of cloth/disposables for convenience.

No problem.  I know a few people that seriously OBSESS over this and many other things.  While I have no problem in educating yourself and if you can prevent harm to your child, why not....some people I know take it way overboard.  My response was not directed towards you, it was directed to me knowing people that are a little obsessive over it.  I am aware that the chemicals come from heating the bottle over and over again, but most plastic baby bottles are all BPA free.  At least all of the ones that I have seen.  Sorry if my op seemed like I was calling you stupid or something.

When I saw glass bottles I did think of the environmental aspect as well.  Even with the covers, I would be afraid I would break them.  That's just me being clumsy though.
  • THe other downside to glass is the weight. I can't imagine that extra weight in an already overloaded diaper bag. Plus, DD started holding her own bottles around 8 months. She hated to be fed by someone else at that point, she wanted to do it on her own. I can't imagine a baby holding a glass bottle, and what if it slipped and hit them (sounds stupid, but it happens!).

Just throwing out a couple other points.

     haha...I'm a mega-kluz so I know I'll probly break my share!!

Good points!  I hadn't thought of either.  I may end up using some of both just as I will probly do with the diaper situation.   I'm so glad we have so many options compared to what our grandparents and their parents had!  Isn't it great?!?!

  • Yeah, the BPA thing sucks, and yes, all of our babies at some point will lick, eat, or chew on some kind of plastic that is not healthy, but I'm most likely going with the Munchkins you were talking about. It just seems like they would hold up better and last longer, and we could use them on multiple kids... and the price is not that different, so why not? Just a personal preference. =)

Try not to eat too much plastic today ladies, unless it's the only thing you can keep down!

  • I"ve thought about it and would prefer to use glass, when possible, too, though BPA free plastic may be more practical when on the go.  Hopefully breastfeeding will go well and I won't need too many.
***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • I love love love my Evenflo glass bottles that we used for ds. They're not that heavy - ds held his own bottles all the time with no problems. They're also a lot more  durable than most people think. I dropped mine on our ceramic tile several times and they never broke. Plus they're way cheaper. I got mine for something like 3 for 5 bucks.

We avoid most plastic for food in our house - even though bottles are mostly bpa free at this point you never know what the next thing they'll find will be. BPA used to be considered safe too. And it's true that there's plenty of things out there that could be hurting you/ causing cancer or whatever but why not limit your exposure to the things you can control?

  • I'm thinking we'll go with the glass on the occasional times we'll give our DC a bottle.  I know they make BPA free plastic--but in my opinion, why take the risk?  Besides, glass is better for the environment.

  • Have you tried returning your plastic bottles?  I returned 3 yr old plastic Dr. Brown's bottles to Babies R Us (without a receipt or box) and they gave me a $68 credit to use towards any type of new bottles that I wanted.  It's worth a shot.
  • imageamymike.fitz:

That information may not be relevant depending on why you are avoiding plastics.  BPA is one of many chemicals that may be used in plastics and some prefer not to wait to hear that whatever they are using now is also unsafe.  Plus glass is better for the environment and is more sanitary.

  • We used the Playtex drop-ins (with the liners). BPA free, much less time consuming to clean (less parts to clean) and the liners are recyclable. That and they also helped w/ gas and colic, though so many bottles claim that now anyway... So much easier to travel with too.. instead of carrying multiple bottles, you have 1 bottle and as many nipple and liners as you need, takes up so much less space! :)
