Maternity Clothes post partum?

So being due mid-late April puts me at a disadvantage with clothes... it will be too warm (probably) for the bulky mat sweaters I've been wearing all winter, yet I'll probably still be too big for my normal clothes- at least for a month or two or longer (and by big, I mean I know my belly will not be flat enough for the tight t shirts i have). So do I buy some mat tshirts now in preparation for that time? I don't necessarily want to buy non-mat clothes in a larger size- that seems like a waste to me since i am planning on getting pregnant again at some point so the mat clothes will get worn again. Suggestions?

Re: Maternity Clothes post partum?

  • you will not want to wear mat. clothes, so I'd suggest buying some cheap loose t-shirts and loose shorts/pants but not maternity ones

you can buy nursing tops if you intend to nurse but I never liked them

  • if you figure you'll be pregnant again anyway, you'll probably still be able to use the bigger clothes again as well - either in 1st tri or pp after the next baby.

obviously, i don't speak from experience! i do plan on wearing a few of the maternity clothes i've bought pp. we'll see. In a clothes post from last week, someone mentioned being so sick of maternity clothes that she got rid of everything immediately.

  • I wore my maternity clothes for a few weeks post partum, then they were too big.  I bought a small amount of clothes in a larger size, and have been wearing those since.  With breastfeeding I still don't fit into my PP shirts yet, so I'm wearing the larger size regular clothes for the most part.  Also your hips sometimes change sizes even if you loose all the weight. So, I'm one size larger in pants and shirts right now, even though at this point I'm 2-3 lbs under my PP weight.  I wouldn't assume you'd fit back into your PP clothes.  Save the $$ on the mat clothes and see what happens :)
  • You could also look into those "maternity style" shirts that are so popular right now. ?I'm wearing a couple of those well into my 2nd tri, so I'd think they'd be perfect post partum as well.
  • My DD was born mid-April.  I lived in Bravado nursing tanks and matching shrugs, and I bought some second-hand maternity shorts, and a pair of "fat jeans". :-)  I ended up borrowing some summer maternity clothes since my pre-preg summer clothes tended to be form fitting even before I was pregnant, and  with nursing my boobies were poking out all over the place. :-)  If I didn't have clothes to borrow, I would have bought a couple cute tops from Old Navy Maternity.  They are having a $10 sale right now.  HTH!
  • I am still wearing my maternity pants, although I did get one pair of pre-preg pants to fit this week.  I agree with the previous poster who suggested the loose flowy shirts that are currently in style.  I got a bunch of these last summer (at Kohls) to wear during first and second tri; I imagine that I'll be back in them this spring and summer.  The looseness will also help with breastfeeding, since the fabric will keep you somewhat covered.

  • I'm still wearing maternity shirts (I used to be a 34 B, now I'm a 36 E!!!), and my pre preg pants are nowhere near fitting.  I bought one pair of big jeans and the rest of the time I wear sweats or maternity jeans.  I refuse to buy a "big girl" wardrobe, so I'm hoping I'll eventually be back to normal.  :(
  • Even though I'm a hair's breath from my pre-preg weight, it's all in different places.  None of my tops fit, and those that do are too short.  My slacks fit, but I wear a larger size in jeans.  I have been slowly buying a new wardrobe that fits my new body better, although I realize my boobs will probably go back to normal when I stop BFing.

I wore my mat jeans for a couple months b/c I was stubborn about buying new jeans.

  • I wore maternity pants or stretchy yoga type pants for the first month or so. Now I can fit into most of my pre pregnancy pants, although some highlight the "fluff" around my middle section and give me a muffin top - ick. ?My pp shirts fit for the most part. ?Before I want back to work two weeks ago I had to go buy a few new work pants since my hips seem to be a bit wider.
  • DS was born at the end of April.  I did have to buy some t-shirts, but that was because it got warm before he was born.  I was really, really annoyed to be buying clothes 2-3 weeks before he would arrive!  But, they came in handy for the early PP period.  I actually bought non-maternity shirts, because I was tired of wearing maternity clothes, and I figured that I would wear them for a while after DS was born.

I wore nursing bras, nursing tanks, and t-shirts most days. I ended up having to buy more shirts later on, because my BBs were huge due to BFing.  All of my old t-shirts didn't fit correctly.
