Breastfeeding

bm in fridge 4days but caked on bottle..still good?

I have 2ounces of bm in fridge and this morning I notices some of it was caked on the bottle...I tried shaking it but it still stuck on the bottle..

Is this bad? I'm thinking I should discard it...not sure if this is normal.

  • Eh. I'd err on the side of caution and trash it.

  • That's very normal.  The fat separates from the other liquid and forms a layer which will stick to the bottle.  Just shake it to mix it in or if you going to use it warm it and it will mix in quicker.

  • that is the fat that has seperated.  it is still good.  just swirl the bottle - it may take a lot of swirling.  or wait until your are ready to use it, and swirl it after you heat it.

  • thanks ladies...I was hoping it was normal since it takes so long for me to pump 1oz.
  • The fat should be stuck on the side.

Also, you don't "shake" breastmilk.  You should swirl it.

  • When you warm it, it will "melt" into the rest of the milk. Unless it smells funny, it is still good.
