Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How much independent play does your 8-9 month old do?

Not that I mind playing with her of course but just curious how other babies her age are....it seems like she played by herself alot more around 6 months but now she seems to get mad pretty quickly even if I'm in the same room and not paying attention to her.

  • Yeah DS is wanting a lot more Mommy & Daddy play time lately.  Even if it is just crawling on top of us or walking around holding our hands.  He isn't much into playing on his own anymore.

  • She will play by herself a lot, but I have to be in the same room (she does the same now as she did at 7-9 mos old). She throws a fit if I leave her in the living room or the pnp.

  • She has just recently started crying when I walk out of the room.... but I don't how much of that is wanting play time vs. starting separation anxiety.

We usually give her about 30-45 min of independent play time in the evening after dinner and bath, but I am always in the room reading a book or something.  She also gets a good amount of ind. play time at the sitters during the day.

  • Agree with you----independent play has decreased!   Folding laundry in the same room as baby is more of a rarity now!
  • DS will play on his own for quite a while, but there are times, especially when he's starting to get tired, or when I've come home from work, that he really wants my attention. He's usually OK if I just sit on the floor with him.
  • Not as much as i would like...but this is a good question to ask Daycare (note to self).  I would think this is the age where they have issues with seperation.
