Babies: 9 - 12 Months

~~Iris~~

Couldn't remember when you were switching boards, but thought you'd be on this one about now (not that you aren't everywhere all the time anyway Smile)

Anyway, I know you use BumGenius and was wondering if you could take me through them (you're good at explaining and I feel like I'm asking a really simple question although I'm a big planner and won't jump into something unless I totally get it).  We currently use prefolds with a Thirsties cover but Alyssa has been leaking at night and I'm getting up my courage to get away from the diaper service (that only does prefolds).  So my questions are: do the BumGenius work like the regular covers (i.e. you don't change/wash the cover every time, just the insert), what do you do with poop diapers if there's any difference, what about laundry (I have heard that you can just stick the soiled items in a bag and wash the whole bag, but do you wash with other stuff? how does the bag fit in the top load washer without being unbalanced?)  Any other tips or info is greatly appreciated (feel free to respond as if I'm a 2 year old, I won't be offended and would love as much info as you're willing to write!)

Thanks!!!

Re: ~~Iris~~

  • BumGenius has a few different type of diapers (fitteds, pockets and all-in-ones).  If you are thinking of the one size, they are pocket diapers.  That means the insert goes inside a pocket in the cover--meaning you can only use the cover once.  It will get soiled when your baby pees/poops.  At night time, you can use two inserts inside the diaper for extra absorbancy.

I empty all my diapers into the wash one by one, then throw the wet bag in.  Don't wash the diapers inside the bag--you want to make sure each diaper really gets clean.  You also want to take each insert out of the cover when you put them in the washer and dryer.  Otherwise they may not get thoroughly cleaned, and they will take FOREVER to dry (hello high electric bill).

I like BumGenius but a few words of caution: you have to be much more careful with them to use the right detergent and avoid diaper creams.  They are much less forgiving than prefolds.  If you are not careful, you may end up with repelling issues, which is a real pain in the ass.  They are a lot more money than buying more prefolds and Thirsties and I'm not convinced it's worth the extra money.

    HTH!

  • I'm butting in:

Try the Eco-Friendly board with these questions, too, they'll help.

I use BumGenius 3.0, which are "pocket diapers".  The diaper "cover" and the insert BOTH go in the washer.  As I change her diaper, I pull out the insert and dump it in the diaper pail, then dump the diaper itself in the diaper pail.  Also dump the cloth wipes in.  THEN, when washing, you can turn the bag inside out as you dump the contents in the washer (since the inserts & diapers are already separated).  MAKE SURE to take the diapers OUT of the nylon bag, do not wash them IN the bag, but you can throw the nylon bag in with the diapers as you empty it.

  • Well, I only bought the covers, the service provides the prefolds, so I haven't invested that much (yet another reason to investigate other options). I paged you because I remember you talking up the BumGenius 3.0s but is there another one you feel is better for the price?

    What are repelling issues?

  • Repelling is when the diapers don't absorb, but the liquid beads up and rolls off them instead--which causes major leakage, sometimes as if your baby weren't wearing a diaper at all.

I like BG and still use them, I just think that prefolds and covers are a better value.
