My baby Spencer is 8 months old today, and still a lil' peanut. His last pedi appt was at 6 months, where he weighed 16 lbs, 7 oz and was in the 32th percentile. At 4 months, he weighed 14 lbs, 15 oz and was in the 54th percentile. The pedi said a drop from ~50% to ~25% isn't a big concern.
I've been taking him in monthly for weight checks that are off the pedi's record. At 7 months, he was 17 lbs even - 22% percentile. Today, at 8 months, he was 17 lbs, 2 oz - 12% percentile. :-(
We don't see the pedi again until 9 months, but I'm worried about my incredibly shrinking Spencie! He doesn't eat solids at all. I try and try, but he just spits it out or keeps his mouth shut completely. He is EBF, and nurses a ton!
And just to show how different two of your own children can be, my Carter was consistently off the charts so this is all new territory to me.
Re: When do you worry about weight gain?
I never worried, unless the doctor was worried. Peyton fell under 10% at one point, but the doctor wasn't concerned because he was still thriving and growing taller.
If you are really worried, it might be worth setting up an appointment with your pedi just to ease your mind.
Kellymom.com has some good info about EBF babies and weight gain. The basic idea is that the charts are based on the average baby and the average baby is formula fed before 6 months and their growth is different.
I'm sorry he is not taking to solid foods. That is tough and must be frustrating.
Hmmm....at her 6 month appt Sabrina was 15lbs 10 oz (I think! It was 15 something..) and she was in the 47th percentile according to my doc. Could the percentiles be out of whack?
I'd probably take him in just for peace of mind.
Yeah, I just figured that out. Duh.
Boys and girls have different percentile standards.?
?
Izzie is hovering around 20th % right now - has been at a steady decline. I think since Spencer is still only 8 months - I wouldn't peg it on the no solids things. Until you start feeding them yogurt or something more high-calorie, babies just don't get a lot of calories from pureed veggies and fruits. I agree with Rachael - I wouldn't worry about it until the dr is worried. That is what I tell myself.?
It might just be that Carter and Spencer have a different set of genetics. You're very lean so maybe Spencer is just taking after his mommy. =]

Hugs, Sheila. Izzie's weight percentile is why I count calories for her everyday (and we never reach the number that she is "supposed" to get). ?
I worry about N's weight constantly, although her pedi doesn't seem to be concerned at all. She was born at the 94% and at her 6 month appt was all the way down to like 38%. Now, at 8 months she is even lower. I have a baby scale at home (although I try not to be obsessive), and it is useful for pre and post BF weighs. There was a period of time around 6 months were she went over 7 weeks and didn't gain a SINGLE ounce. She has never been a good or consistent nurser and it is hard for me to tell when she's hungry because she doesn't really fuss. She loves solids but is very, very mobile (on the verge of walking, lord help me), so I have to think her level of activity is the reason she can't pack on the pounds. The pedi did give me the green light to 1) add a 3rd solids meal early, and 2) add a bit of olive oil to her solids. I have also started trying to get her to take a bottle of formula a day, but that's only been mildly successful (she doesn't like formula or the bottle--and I am not going to kill myself to pump for a bottle she'll waste).
It is so stressful.
Well, from one low-weight baby mama to another, I always worry about it! How's that for helpful? Ha!
I'd call your pedi now. When we took E in a few weeks ago to talk about her cough, I asked the pedi about her weight. The pedi looked at E's growth chart and instead of following a curve, her weight gain was tanking. So she had us put E on the weight gain diet. Your pedi might have some suggestions that would help your little peanut eat.
