Fluoride

I was wondering if I could hear other mothers thoughts on flouride for their little ones.

My husband had taken Kendall for her 6 month appt and the dr gave us a rx for fluoride drops.  DH works for a water company so we have always used spring water for her bottles.  We do have a bottle of fluoridated water to try out.  But, I was wondering what others think.

I know when I was younger, my teeth became slightly stained from fluoride.  The pediatrician blamed the dentist and the dentist blamed the pediatrician.  So, I am slightly leary of using it for my little one.

Thanks for any insights!

Re: Fluoride

  • We use the Nursery water which already contains fluoride. The doc says its fine. As far as staining teeth I couldn't tell you since she's toothless :)

  • i have weak enamel and stains on my teeththat my dentist blamed on fluoride in the water from when i was younger.  my ped says that can't be true.  i have no idea...
  • We gave those drops to Noah once and they made him sick.  At one we gave him filtered tap water for drinking and now, at almost 3, he uses toothpaste with flouride.  His dentist is very happy with his teeth.  Good luck!
  • We've always given Mikey tap water
  • At the?beginning?I used the nursery water that contains it already. After that Tap water filtered (Britax). My pedi said that tap water is ok and it contains enough.

    Barbie?

  • most tap water contains fluoride, so you shouldn't need drops. my pedi told us she'd talk to us about a vitamin at 12 months, not sure if fluoride is part of that

  • Well, from everything I've read, there is a reason why toddler toothpaste does NOT contain fluoride and that is because swallowing fluoride can cause permanent white spots on the teeth. So knowing that, I personally would not give my child fluoride drops.  The fluoride he gets from tap water is enough to keep his teeth strong until he is old enough to rinse and spit when brushing his teeth with regular toothpaste.
