When can you identify body parts?

At my last appt, I was amazed that the OB could very quickly and easily press on my stomach and tell me baby's position. I can't even identify a hard spot in my belly to guess if it might be a head or butt. Maybe I'm not pressing hard enough?

How far along were you when you were able to figure out baby's position on your own? I was fairly thin before getting pg and haven't gained a ton of weight, so I thought this would be easier by now. I have my 28wk appt next week, and I might ask the OB then to help me figure it out.

    I never could with my DD.  When she flipped at 37 weeks, I had no idea.. I couldn't tell top from bottom!

    My ob did that on monday and it freaked me out. I think I felt his butt last night pushing against my right side. I only think its the butt b/c he was also kicking that way. I've been trying to feel things ever since monday.

    For the last week or so, this little guy has been pushing up really hard right at the top of my bump with either his head or his butt - I can't tell!  My doctor has never mentioned that she could tell but I'm definitely going to ask at my appointment next week.  I want to know what part of him I'm pushing back against!
