Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Update on nap sitch and daycare & ? for daycare moms

I have posted in the past about how DD doesnt nap well at daycare and therefore makes up for it over the weekend by sleeping 13 hrs at night and a total of 3-5hrs of naps.
I talked to the director yesterday bc she had 2 half hour naps at weird times (normal AM nap by 10, but yest it was at noon).  I stressed that it was important for DD to get these naps during the day bc she was exhausted at night.  I get that she wont nap as well at school as she does at home, but its redic already.  They wont let her cry at all (at home I put her down and she'll cry for 5 mins max), but they are just waiting too long to put her down IMO.
Also, they want to move her into the toddler room where they only get 1 nap from 12-3.  I dont want her moving if she cant get the AM nap in as well.  When they tried giving her only 1 nap she slept for only 1 hr and it wasnt enough.  I want them to get her on 2 good naps and then we can work on transitioning to 1.  They really want to graduate her, but she's not ready for 1 nap at this point and I'd rather she hang with the babies for a while longer because her sleep is more important at this point.
I'll talk to the teacher today to see how it went, but its very frustrating!  I understand that theres so much more going on at school and its fun to play, more noise, etc, but she needs to get her naps!  I was annoyed that the teachers thought her nap schedule was acceptable.
Any other daycare moms have simialr situations?  any advice?  TIA!

  • You might find that she naps better in the toddler room.  Since they all nap together, they typically turn the lights off, put on soft music, and everything is quite and peaceful.  Also, all that running around with the other toddlers really wears them out.

  • DS just moved up to the toddler room this week.  They also do one nap a day, but they are allowed to nap at other times if they need to.  Are you sure they won't let them nap at all?  Our center will make them a quiet place in the corner with some pillows and they can lay down there.  He also sleeps 12-13 hours at night and takes a 3-4 hour nap on the weekend, which is longer than at daycare, but I figured that is normal.  And yeah, he's exhausted when he gets home in the evenings, but I also figure this is normal.  But it sounds like you don't feel like what's going on with your DD is acceptable to you, so that's all that matters.  I'm sure they want to graduate her because she is ready to go on all other levels, and they can't leave toddlers in the infant room forever.  So I don't know, because I can really see both sides.  Hopefully you can work something out that is acceptable to both of you.  GL!

  • She will sleep soooooo much better when she has a scheduled nap at daycare. Trust me! DS was a horrible napper but at 10 months they moved him to the big kid side of the infant room where they had naptime from 12-3, once he moved there he napped sooooooo well. Now he's in the toddler room and he's still napping really well.
  • I agree with all pp - don't fight the transition. Sounds like things aren't going well now in the infant room, so why not switch? There is a good chance things will go better.
  • DD sleeps way better in the toddler room than in the infant room.  In the infant room we're lucky if she sleeps for an hour total.  In the toddler room, she sleeps 1.5-2 hours every time.  It's quiet, the room is darkened and everyone else is doing it (fewer distractions + monkey see, monkey do).  Since the infant room isn't working out, tell the director you'd like to try the toddler room for a couple weeks and see how it goes.

  • I agree with all the pp -- switch to the toddler room!  My DD was a TERRIBLE napper in the infant room.  She took maybe two half hour naps per day, and was exhausted all the time!  I could not see how she would possibly deal with the toddler room nap schedule -- but it's really quite magical, lol!!  The first week was a transition period, but after that she sleeps 2 or 2.5 hours a day at naptime.  At home on the weekends, she might still take two naps occasionally, but has taken to the new schedule quite well.  GL!
