s/o prenatal vitamins

At my annual exam, I was talking to my doc about TTC this year and she offered to write me a script for prenatal vitamins. I asked her what the difference was btw prescription and OTC, and  she said there were no OTC prenatal vitamins.

 WTF?

  • Find a new dr. Most prescriptions are identical to OTC. Some people find though that prescriptions are cheaper(it really depends on your insurance).  I am older and was advise to take a prescription vs an OTC.  That and if you have MTHFR should OTC be significantly different from most OTC.

  • One I found out I was pg, my doctor switched me to a prescription prenate.  It has a higher folic acid dosage.

  • Your doctor is afucktard. I've been taking Target brand PNV's for the last 2 years.

But that is easily remedied with extra folic acid. My doctor said there was no difference between my Target brand and the one he would prescribe me, other than the cost (which for me was cheaper to do Target brand).
  • Is it possible you misunderstood? I just can't imagine that.

I agree, I just found it easier to take one pill.  I took the Target brand for 3 months prior to being pg.

  • Uh.....ok. I wonder if I've actually been taking giant tic tacs for a few years now. Because the label SAID they were prenatal vitamins...

Perhaps this is just the sort of red flag you need to take your lady bits to a different dr.

  • i've bene on target brand for 10 years now...cheap, 1 pill and they don't upset my stomach.

my primary care doc advised me to start them since all "of age" women should be on them just in case.

I also does not address the fact that her doctor stupidly said there are no OTC prenatals. She didn't say they weren't as good, she said there weren't any at all.

Sorry if my comment seemed irrelevant.

Yeah, it scared me that she would say that. This was the first time I saw her and she is from Russia, so perhaps they don't have any there... but still.

The kicker? She's about 5 mo pregnant herself.

  • I think you need a new doctor...this one seems fishy.
  • Unrelated to your OP, but I notice you have a budget blog. You may want to look at mine- linked in siggy- for some tips to help you reach your goals (although you seem to be doing very well)!
  • Then your doctor is an idiot. There are tons of brands of OTC PNVs. I know I sure as hell don't get mine by prescription.?
