2nd Trimester

This is probably flame worthy...

Since nobody wants bumpers or quilts for their little one's crib because it raises the risk for suffocation... how are you gonna make sure that they're warm? Crank up the heat in your house lol?

Sorry if this is the dumb question of the day, but it just seems silly to me to lay your baby in bed without a cover.

  • We registered for several blankets and also plan to use receiving blankets to cover up baby for sleeping.

  • Well, you swaddle them when they're little. But yeah, at some point you'd have to turn the heat up higher than normal I would think.

  • Sleepers.  And I really don't want him to be too warm.
  • Swaddling. When they're bigger and it's cold enough to really need it, I'm less worried (plus our heat is generally on high enough that they wouldn't necessarily need a blanket).

  • Warm PJs and swaddling :)

When they get older they just kick the blankets off, so you still have to rely on the PJs!

  • You don't have to have a quilt, but a tightly tucked blanket or a soft, warm sleeper is usually sufficient....
  • Sleep sacks are the answer.

  • Actually, our baby slept in a co-sleeper next to our bed for the first few months, but we did swaddle him with blankets.
  • I have read negative things on quilts, bumpers and crib skirts today and guess what I am getting all 3 from PBK and they will be here on Thursday...YAY!
  • Sleepers are the easiest way to keep them warm if it's that cold.

Typically they say to dress kids the same way you dress (unless you keep your house at like 62 degrees or something).  They stay warm better than you think they do while in their crib.

  • You might as well start early with dressing baby warmly for bed, b/c once he becomes a toddler, you don't want to be waking up every hour to put his blanket back in place so he can keep warm!  Honestly it's not so hard.  In the winter, we double layer - onesie under a footed fleece sleeper.  Sometimes we add socks under the sleeper or even leggings if it is super cold.
  • Are you kidding?  We put clothes on our kids.  They make these things called sleepers for a reason.
  • the halo blanket!

Yeah, but I sleep clothed and covered. It gets cold in Colorado! Sleepers make sense, I'm just a worrier!

Sleep sacks or swaddlers & you are supposed to keep the baby's room at 68 degrees to reduce the risk of SIDS so you can't crank up the heat too much.

  • I suggest you read some baby care books.

Babies should NOT use blankets... you can swaddle them, use sleep sacs, and yes- keep your house a little warmer than you might normally- but anyone who does ANY resesarch/reading about how to care for an infant knows that blankets that are not tightly swaddled around baby are a SIDS and suffocation risk.

The room in our house that baby will be in tends to get really warm really fast so I doubt we will have this problem.

  • First of all we're talking about newborns here, not bigger babies or toddlers. Just because I'm not getting a crib set, doesn't mean I'm going to lay my baby in their crib naked. You aren't supposed to put newborn babies under the larger quilts that come with bedding sets (or on top of the quilt either). They either go in the crib swaddled or under a lighter blanket that is tucked into the bottom of the crib (see link). The other option is a sleep sack.

P.S. My baby (and most current 2nd tri babies) will be born in July/summertime. I don't think we'll have to worry about our babies staying warm.

  • do NOT put loose blankets or any other chachkis in the crib with your kid!

halo sleep sacks are good.  so is swaddling them tightly.

You should be just fine in July and August.  They have lighter sleep sacks at Target for semi-colder nights in Sept.  Overall you should be ok. Colorado weather is fabulous around that time.

  • LOL, me too!  I sould get mine today, I'm am hoping they are waiting for me at home!  I plan on putting the quilt over a rocking chair, but I was unaware that the bumpers and skirt were a bad idea, I guess I better do some research....

I am doing the same with the quilt!!  Ahhh i don't need the research women have done it for years why stop now...lol

  • Seriously? I'm sorry...I can SORT OF understand the bumper debate, but full on quilts (and even blankets not swaddled with) in the crib is a definite, huge no-no.
  • Well, our baby is due in July and we don't have A/C so I'm pretty sure keeping him warm isn't going to be an issue until at least late October. And then, I have swaddle wraps I can use, and there is always footed pjs!

  • we plan to use the sleep sacks or swaddling blankets and heavier sleepers if need be
  • With my first one, I was so scared to use blakets, pillows and whatnot, but we ended up cosleeping at around 8 weeks because she was sick and I went back to work. She and I shared a pillow and she hates blankets and kicks them off, but we always had one on the bed. We tried sleep sacks at first and they worked in those first few weeks but she hated having her legs confined. She also hated swaddling as well. Her crib had a bumper as well, but she hardly slept there since we coslept.
