I feel so bad for my little one - he's 4.5 months old and i feel like it's too early for this!!! based on your experience, after the first cold, does it get better or worse from here? i keep trying to tell myself that it will build up his immune system...
Re: 4 days in daycare and already a cold!!!
My little one is almost 5 months old...she started at a daycare center at 4 months and so far she's had pneumonia, a nasty viral infection, an ear infection, and tonsillitis (in the daycare's defense, I don't know if the pneumonia is from them because no other babies/kids had it.) I'm hoping it will get better once it warms up and flu season is over. My older DD went to a small home daycare and was never sick as a baby. I really love having them at a center but definitely don't love the sickness thing. I know she'll be sick less when she's older but that doesn't really help us now!
Yup, my son got a bad virus his first ever week at daycare too. It's normal.
But keep in mind - it's because he's being exposed to lots of new people/germs, and he's building up his immune system. This has to happen eventually, either now or when he starts school.
DS still gets a lot of colds - which wouldn't be a real big deal except that they almost always lead to an ear infection and pink eye. He's getting tubes later this month, so we're hoping that the colds won't be as much of a bother anymore.
Our experience is that he'll be sick around this time frame (jan to april), be not as sick until the following jan.
This is our second year of the jan-april sick season and it has been better. Typically I hear they get out of all this sick stuff after 2-2.5 years old.
Btw I also think taking care of a sick younger baby is much easier than an older baby.
It's tough but hang in there.
i was about to post the same question.
hope your little one gets better soon.
we started our DS at daycare last june 08 when he was 4.5 mos. he also got sick on the 2nd week (stomach bug -- dairhea, fever, throw up).
since then it seems like he gets a cold 1 or 2x/month esp during this winter season. besides him being sick, it sucks cuz his sleep is affected and we constantly have to do sleep training until the next cold comes which seems like every 2 weeks.
he just got over a cold 2 ws ago, and is STTN again, when he got a cough this time (teething). sigh.... the only consolation is his immune sys is building up.
hope the spring/summer season is better and he does not get sick as much.

My 10-month old has only been sick 1 full day - sick enough to stay home from daycare. She's had the sniffles a couple of times and a cough.
On the other hand, her cousins who have a SAHM, have been pretty constantly sick this winter. Oh, and they were the ones who gave her the tummy virus that kept her home from daycare that one time.
So bottom line: You just never know, it's not necessarily daycare. Even SAH kids are around others, go to the store, etc.
