So I am 16 weeks and my OB said today in my exam I need to gain more weight I have only gained 3lbs so far. I eat at least 6 meals a day of protein complex carbs, veggies everything I have been trying to eat healthy and I am eating on average 2500 to 3000 calories a day help. Oh I do work out 3 or 4 times a week but nothing to hard just like 30 to 45 min on the eliptical. Any tips on how to put on the weight?
Thanks
Re: I have to gain at least 5 pounds in 4 weeks help!!!
Milkshakes. I had the same problem! Milkshake with WHOLE milk!!!!!
Were you very underweight to begin with? I don't see why your doctor is so worried. Do you mean three pounds this trimester or overall? For many women first trimester equals 0 pounds gained, some even lose weight. I think forcing your body to gain weight when you are obviously eating plenty of calories is not needed. You sound like you're eating healthy and that is good for your baby! Make sure you take your vitamins and if you're really concerned I would cut back on the exercise to 20 minutes of walking.... see if that helps. Try adding healthy fats too like olive oil, avacado, walnuts, etc... maybe that will put some more calories into your diet.
I'm 16 weeks too but I've gained about six pounds- I'm not worried at all. Just don't starve yourself and eat whenever you're hungry

Do you really HAVE to? At my 16weeks appointment I had only gained 2 pounds (and I didn't have a day of morning sickness!)... my OB said she expected me to be up a total of 10 pounds at my 20weeks appointment. I told her that would be challenging because I hardly gain any weight (in fact I was underweight until last year) and she said that as long as I am eating healthy and not starving myself to death I should be fine. The 10pounds she expected me to gain were just a suggestion... but if I don't I don't... I can't stuff myself just to have that 10 pounds gain.
As of today I'm up 3.5pounds total.
Don't "kill" yourself, eat when you're hungry and you'll be fine. Just my 2cents.?
"You're gonna miss this You're gonna want this back You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast..."
I know you're trying to eat healthy but maybe you're not eating things that are really doing you any good. And now is not the time to be a health or fitness nut.?
I'm eating the same way I did before--no more, no less but I don't obsess about it being all perfect, though mainly healthy. Lots of cereal (always with whole milk or 2% NEVER skim) with blueberries or bananas for breakfast or scrambled eggs with cheese and peppers. Lunch is always soup--something with lots of veggies and beans like Spinach and white bean, Vegetable, Pasta Fagioli or MInestrone. Then snacks are low-fat yogurt with berries and granola or slices of apples with cheddar cheese or chips and salsa. Dinner always has protein, veggie and starch.?
Eat peanut butter before bed. Like a peanut butter sandwich.
I was not underweight I was right where I should be before hand. She just said keep working out but eat more. And I am not trying to be to healthy just not eating a bunch of junk, I am eating just like before I was pregnant just more, but the ensure idea is a good one thank you. It also makes me feel better that not everyone had gained a bunch of weight at first.
Thanks
Really?
If this were really an issue I'm guessing your doctor would have given you some suggestions.
Really? I am in my 26th week with twins and only have gained 10 (lost 3 in early weeks) my dr, shook my hand and said great job. My OB says people start to gain alot from 20 wks on.
Anyway...eat full fat foods I guess. Some fast food, ice cream, etc.
Ditto this. I am 21w and have put on 0.5lb and my midwife has no concerns at all.
I'll take mexican food for 500 Alex!
Oh I could give you some also. Considering I have put on too many pounds in the last month. I need to lose about 5.
Eat lots of ice cream!
Milk shakes with whole milk, or maybe ice cream. You'll still get your calcium, just some added calories.
Really?? I went in for my check-up at 15 weeks 4 days and had only gained 2 pounds since my pre pregnancy weight. My doctor wasn't concerned at all. I bet you can do it, I've heard the further along you get, it get's a little easier to gain the weight.
Why does your dr. say you need to gain more weight? were/are you severly underweight to begin with? I hadn't gained any weight at 16 weeks and my dr. was fine with it? Around 20 weeks she mentioned she'd like to see me gain a few pounds and at that point I had gained 3 lbs. She wasn't too concerned and didn't give me a goal such as "gain 5 lbs in 4 weeks".
16 weeks isn't far enough along to be concerned about not gaining enough weight yet - especially if you've already gained 6 lbs.
Tips? It'll happen - don't worry - it's inevitable. People gain differently and at different times. As long as you are eating and not exercising off everything you are eating - I'd say you are fine.
Ditto the relax comments. I don't know what your Dr is talking about (unless you were very underweight pre-pg). I still haven't gained a lb this pregnancy and didn't start gaining with DS#1 until 21w. Neither Dr (Pg in a different state this time) cared as long as my baby was growing at a good rate. Between 20w-35w (when I delivered DS#1) I gained over 1lb per week without changing anything in my diet or exercise routine. This is just how my body does pregnancy. My MIL was the same way with all four of her pregnancies.
If you are still concerned, little things like whole milk, cheeses, protein (like beef) etc will help you gain too. Breakfast shakes (like carnation instant breakfast) help too (i had to use those in High school).
