Gliders..nice to have or overrated?

Re: Gliders..nice to have or overrated?

  • So far, everyone I know has told me gliders are a must-have... very comfortable. I have no experience myself so I'll read what other moms say.

  • Overrated. I'd rather get something more versatile. Something that could make the move out of the nursery and into our normal furniture afterward. Either that or I'd buy one used off of craigslist for a deal. I'd never spend a couple hundred dollars on a new one though.

Nice to have.  With that said, I had NO intention of going out and dropping a boatload on one.  I just happened to get one from a neighbor for $25 (with the ottoman).  Otherwise, DH and I were going to buy a recliner that swiveled or rocked and use that because we could move it to a living space later on.

  • My friends swear by them. They said you'll sleep there more than your own bed if you aren't planning to co-sleep! I am planning on this being a must have!
  • It's been a must have at our place. I still use it with my 17 mo ds. I'm already worrying about what will happen if ds ever wakes up in the middle of the night after the baby is here and I don't have a glider in his room!

I do have one that looks like an arm chair rather than a rocker so it could be moved to another room as a usable chair later but until we're done having kids, I don't really see that happening.

  • I don't have any first hand experience but we have two large rocking chairs already in our house, so we will just use one in the nursery.

  • I didn't have one with my first, but did have a rocker in her room.  I didn't miss it.  But, she was a really easy baby. I got one when my DS was about 2 months old and couldn't have lived without it.  BEST $$ (well, other than the FP papasan swing) that I spent on any baby item, hands down.  We still use it and he is 2.

  • We have a rocking recliner that worked just fine with #1.  If I came across a super good deal I might get a glider though.  But you NEED something to rock the baby in IMO.

  • The baby's not even here yet but I'm loving ours.  So comfy!
  • I can't stand the typical "nursery gliders" just because they remind me of the nursery at my church when I was little and the mean ladies there...they have some nice ones out these days, but I'm just too scarred by them!

We were planning on not getting a glider/rocker at first and waiting until we have more space, a few months after the baby is born, but I'm starting to think I really do enjoy rocking/gliding.  So I found a few options that are manageable prices and can work in our current living room, in the nursery whenever we get a bigger place, or back in the living room then if that's what we prefer.  There are options, but you do have to spend some time hunting for what you want and for a do-able price-tag.

  • We didn't have one with our son and I hated not having one.  We just ordered one this week for the new baby, I can't wait!

I should clarify we didn't order a "glider" but a leather rocking recliner that will match with our living room furniture after.

  • I would say they are nice to have, but not a MUST have.  The people I work for have a really nice glider, but they never used it.  The glider was in the nursery and they would rock the kids to sleep on the couch.
  • I guess it's not technically a must-have, but it's as close to a must-have as you can get IMO.  I practically lived in the glider at nights doing those feedings.
  • A definite must! It's my favorite seat in the house already. :)

  • I figure you're going to want to have somewhere to nurse upstairs.  It doesn't have to be a glider but it's a pretty comfortable/appropriate option.
  • must have if you have nowhere else to sit in babies room.  you will be in there alot at all hours of the night trying to feed the baby and you need somewhere to sit.  i'm so glad i got a glider.  $150 at target.

  • my co-worker swears by hers. She said it is the best thing every to rock and calm a baby.

Her friend just bought a big comfy chair and after a few days of manually rocking her fussy baby she ran out and bought a glider.

This convinced me and we will most definitely get one. Also in trying out different seats I think they are more comfortable and easier to rock/move in  that other types of rocking chairs or the reglar comfy charis that glide/rock.

  • I'm already a mother and I thin it's a must-have. You will spend hours and hours holding and rocking your baby (and even toddler.) It's worth every penny to have something comfortable to situate yourself in. You'll spend some long nights in that thing.
  • We have a regular rocker...wood with a seat and back pad.  My mom used it with me.  I'm going to give it a try first.  Then if it's too uncomfortable, we might have to break down and get a glider.  I like the recliner idea though.  Might have to give it a try.  Sounds much more functional after baby is older.
  • i love mine- i will be getting another chair for #2 since DH said we cant take DD's away- definitely worth it and trust me when you fall asleep in a chair its best for it to be comfy :)

  • I have heard that gliders are a definite must-have. I have already ordered mine-- I sat it in one time and fell in loooveee.
  • I think any kind of rocking chair is a must have.  It doesn't neccessarily have to be a glider.
  • I would like one but not sure it will fit in our small nursery. We'll get it at the end and I think from Walmart, I saw a nice one for $130. It has cognac color wood and beige cushions, so we could use it in the home office or living room later on.

  • All my friends agreed that it's a must have.

I'm leaning towards one with wood that looks like a rocker, though with fully padded arms, but mostly because of the cost. The fully upholstered ones seem to be out of my budget.

  • We found one that looks more like a lazy boy.  We are getting one.  My parents are buying it as one of our gifts.  Everyone I talked to said it is a must have. I will find out.
