Nanny has a ? for Moms: when does baby switch to one nap?

The baby I watch is about 13 months and I feel like he might be ready for one nap instead of two.  He usually sleeps for an hour and a half in the morning and then again in the afternoon, but he has been skipping one a day or sleeping for half an hour tops.

Just wondering when a baby typically switches from two naps to one and if now is a good time to get him started on the adjustment.

  • My 21m old just switched about 1m ago. She sometimes asks for a 2nd nap. But she tells me "Nap", "Sleep", or "Tired" when she wants to sleep.

  • Ben is a year old and he still definitely still needs two naps a day.  My daughter didn't switch to one nap a day until she was a year and a half, or so.

  • I hear that most daycares switch around 12 months. But my 13 month old still takes 2-3 naps a day, and I am perfectly fine with that.
  • DS is very random. Sometimes he will take 2, sometimes just one and sometimes 1 and a 20 minute cat nap.
  • My almost 13 month old is transitioning right now. I've still been trying for two but most days she only actually takes one. I think I'm going to stop trying the morning nap and just let her take one mid-day. I think all kids are different so it's tough to base it on another child. GL!
  • My daughter dropped the second nap about  4 or 5 months ago, when she was around 14 months old.  It was a weird transition and took a couple of weeks to adjust, but she used to stay up until about 11:00 and then sleep to 1:00 and have lunch right when she woke up.  Then, after a couple of months of that, now she can stay awake until 1:00, so she has already eaten lunch around 12:00, then naps from about 1:00 to 3:00, and she is good to go until bed-time at 8:00.   To get us through the transition from dropping a nap, she would sometimes take little cat naps in the late afternoon for about half an hour - hour.
  • I son switched to 1 nap at 11 months. ?

One of my girls dropped to one nap around 10 months and the other around 11 months.
  • My older DD went to one nap at 12 months when daycare switches the kids and my younger DD moved herself to one nap at 10 months.  I think my older DD could have handled the switch sooner but I didn't push it.  She was never a great napper and has done way better since she went down to 1 nap.  My kids nap right after lunch.

  • My girls dropped their 2nd nap when they were 11 months old.  They just wouldn't sleep for the afternoon nap - we'd leave them in their room for more than an hour and they would just play instead of sleep.  We moved their morning nap to around noon and dropped the afternoon nap.
  • I think we are transitioning right now (14 months). ?Our pedi told us it can happen any time during the second year. ?DS still gets tired mid-morning, so he sometimes goes into his crib for quiet time, even if he doesn't sleep, for about 45 min-1 hr around 10 AM. ?He definitely needs the downtime and sometimes DOES conk out. ?Then he gets up, eats, plays, and goes down around 1 for a longer PM nap, till about 3 or 3:30. ?I am fine with letting him have two quiet times in a day, even if he's "reading" books in his crib of just chilling out for 45 minutes during one of them. ?
