C & P from my local board... WTF?

https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/12190073.aspx

Is she serious??   I'm confused, so she's saying that this co-worker of hers is having radiation seeds implanted and she's concerned for her well being.   Does anybody understand this?

Re: C & P from my local board... WTF?

  • Yes, I do to some degree. Sounds like he is having a typical radiation treatment for prostate cancer and she is concerned about exposure to him because she is pregnant. I know when my mom's cat had radiation treatment for her thyroid, the cat had to be isolated at the vet for a week and then again at home after that for another. The risk is relatively low, but the cat was still considered a bit "hot" and could potentially harm another human with close contact. I can see being concerned while pregnant.??I have no idea what the risk factor is with something like the man has, but?I'm assuming he has gotten the clearance from his doctor if he is being allowed to return to work. I'm sure she is fine, but being understandably cautious.

WTF???? How can someone else's radiation be transmitted to someone else??? Its not like he is going to lick her, nor is she going to be in the room with him when he has the procedure done. I'm sorry, I just don't get it either.

I mean, its not like second hand smoke where someone blows the actual smoke in your face.

    WEIRD!!!

  • My friend's father just had the radiation seeds implanted for prostate cancer.  They are NOT supposed to be around children or pregnant women!  I would be worried if I was her too.  My friend was so glad she wasn't pregnant yet or she wouldn't be able to see her dad for months and her mom isn't even allowed to sleep in the same bed with him.  Not sure for how long though.

I know, that's what I thought too, like she thinks it's contagious or something.   I think this girl is weird.

You don't get how radiation works? I don't know the scientific explanation but I think it's pretty clear that radiation DOES affect people around the source depending on amount and strength (remember Chernobyl, Hiroshima, 3 mile Island?).

Yeah, when you're pregnant, you have to be kind of careful to avoid x rays and people emitting radioactive waves (ie cancer treatment).?

  • The girl is not weird at all. How can you make that assumption when you don't have a clue? There is a risk and her concern is VERY valid.

  • Ditto amajane and JARbaby.

Read up on it and I think you'll understand where the OP was coming from.  Especially since they've struggled to conceive and she's already high risk because of twins and her age.  I'd be worried too.  I think her concerns are totally valid.

  • Interesting, I've never heard of that before at all. I've actually learned something here today.

She should call her doc to discuss.

Well I think it's weird when somebody posts a question like this and doesn't explain to the rest of us what exactly implantation seeds are.   I have never known anybody who has had prostate cancer let alone implantiation seeds.  But, if you ask me about skin cancer I'll be sure to jump on the bandwagon and tell you lots of info.  I had skin cancer when I was pregnant and you don't see me jumping on people about things they don't know anything about.

  • Poor girl! I don't know how I would word it, but she definitely needs to say something!

If I do not know about something someone is talking about I look into it so I can learn and possibly help them. I learned all of this today as well. I never assume and I don't post if I don't beyond a shadow of a doubt and can back it up.

  • I think it's the radation that she was worried about.

The tone of your post just comes across to me like you're looking for someone to confirm that it's ok to pick on this girl, especially based on the "WTF" in your post title.  It doesn't come across like you're genuinely asking for an explanation about what radiation seeds are.

  • My husband's employee had the same procedure.  He had a letter from his doctor to show his employer that said he should not be in the same room as a pregnant woman.  And that anyone should maintain a distance of at least 5 feet.  I don't think that this person should not be allowed to return to work, but like with any disability (pregnancy or cancer) accommodations should be made.

have to agree with amajane - there is a risk, a low one, but my sister and mother went through radiation and couldn't be around vulnerable people (i.e. pg women, children) She has the right to be concerned but nothing that can't be resolved.

  • One of my very, very good friends is going to go through radiation treatment in a month or two and it sounds exactly like what she was telling me about.

Anyway - the girl asked a perfectly normal question.  She doesn't have to explain anything to anyone, she was just hoping that someone with experience on the matter would pipe up & say something (which happened).  No one else seem(ed)(s) to have any issue with it.

  • I don't think it was this chicks job to educate us on the details of radiation therapy.  She just wanted to know from those who knew if this was a valid concern (which it is)!  Nothing rude about that at all.

    Um...it radiates...outwards.  Like heat from a "radiator".

As someone whose mom went through radiation while I was PG, I know a bit about the subject.   Some radiation itherapy s safe for PG women, like the type my mom had(she went in every day and they zapped her with the beam.   All the radiation was contained in the room.   This type was safe...she was not radioactive and not a risk to me and unborn baby)    However, some types are NOT safe...and the one she is asking about, the seeds, is one of them.   He should not be around PG women!

I asked all about radiation when my mom was about to start it.   Why would you think it odd for her to ask?   I asked about chemo too since I was around mom when she was getting treatment(she would be in the hospital for a week since she got chemo every 3 weeks for 6 days...it was a 24 hour drip)  Not a silly question at all.
